Percussion caps what do you use?
« on: December 31, 2009, 10:05:19 AM »
What brand? I stick to CCI and love the new Mag CCI cap, I have tried Remington Caps and they were horrible! I always snap a few caps before shooting and the Rem Caps were week, I could hardly hear them I also found they did not move the dust like the CCI caps do when you point your gun down to snap a few caps. I shoot a .54 Itailan made Hawken copy My hunting load is 100gr of fffg, ya I use 3f more than Two F with a Round ball and I use FFG with a 440gr Minni bullet for Bigger game such as Moose.( Same 100gr Charge)
Now did I get a bad batch of caps or are they all like this?
I had a few Delay Fires with the Rem caps I would not call it a hang Fire but it was slower to me. Funny thing My friend say's it's because I have a shifter ball epoxy'd to the end of my carry ram rod he said I pack the powder to tight lol. I will use them up shooting gophers as I bought 300 of them this comming Spring.
Oh my Gopher load is cut in Half 50gr lol.

I'm working off a tin of Remingtons right now, 'bout 30 left, was all I could get local.  Haven't had any firing problems, but having a hard time getting the Rem's off the nipple, tho.  I prefer the CCI Mags.  Shooting Pyrodex RS.

Yes they need to be pulled off as they do not spread apart and fall off like the CCI ones. I bought lot's of the Rem  as the Price was right but now regret it. But now I am having a problem finding Flint's for my .50 nobody seems to have them  ::)

moisture trouble, too easily unreliable because of temp swings and condensation.

I'm sure somebody has used nothing but rem caps for years. You can throw RWS caps in a glass of water for 1/2 an hour, shake the water off and they go bang! I've done it.
I used CCI mag caps till i found a supply of RWS. They don't make the green ones any more and my supplier dried up  :( and I've read that the new red RWS don't have the same power,,

Oddly I haven't had problems with Remington caps but have had some with RWS caps, like they're dirty and are hard to get off the nipple. It may be the newer mixture. CCI caps have given me no problems.

YMMV

I was given two tins of Remington caps a couple years ago. All but 1 went bang and I cant vouch for their history befor I got them. Can't really say anything bad about them. But I use CCI if I have the choice.

I used to use RWS caps. So far for the last couple of years CCI mag caps have worked great.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid caps may be following the primers lead and we may be forced to use whatever we're lucky enough to find.  Usually, this time of year I make a round to all the nearby Wallworlds and check for red-tagged muzzle loader items(especially caps).  This year, out of 5 stores, I found 2 tins of Win Mags, nothing else.  I've used more CCI over the years but I'm just finishing up a few tins of Rem's that I got red-tagged last year....they worked well for me and seemed to pop off the nipple a little easier than usual(although that probably has more to do with the nipple than the cap).

Just curious! Why do you use such a heavy load in that 54? Do you get as good a group as....70 or 80 grains? 100 grains of 3f would be about 115 of 2f. I have a 62 smoothbore I hunt deer and elk with and my hunting load for it is 65 grains of 3f.

My hunting load for 54 cal T/C Hawken with 445 grain shocker bullet is the same 65 grains 3f.
Better groups and nice on my shoulder ;D

I bought a bunch of Remington #11s for 25 cents a tin at Walmart.  That's what I use.

I'm with you on the CCI...they have always worked well for me...nice warms days...wet snow...or even pouring rain they have always gone "pop" for me.

RWS caps.

Unfortunately I am down to my last 1000.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.
