I'M READY!
« on: October 27, 2003, 02:57:00 PM »
Got my report card today from school and it was a good one thank goodness. Me and mom had a deal that if I had good grades I got to miss school the first 2 days of trapping season. It looks like I'm on for that deal.

Trapping season opens up on Nov. 10 which is in 2 weeks. I can't wait.
I plan on hitting the coons hard and also making sets for any other animal sign I come upon. I don't care if I catch a possum, just so long as I'm am breaking my back in the fur shed come the second day of season.

Good Luck on all of your lines and be safe. Keep me updated on your catches cause I know ya'll will here from me quite often in trapping season.

If you havent done any scouting for yr sets  do that before season and it will go much easier when opening day comes to set traps.  If you use drags  at certain sets  put yr drags out   so you wont have to carry extra weight.  Also  practice yr dirt holes if you use that type of set so you can make them easily.  Have a safe one and keep us informed.  Good luck ad happy trapping.

Now you watch that cuttin school stuff, in time you'll come to realize that a good education will make you a better trapper among other things.  Do like RdFx suggested and work hard Sunday the 9.  Come Monday AM you could get in a pile of sets in a real hurry, make school, run the line and set till dark.  I'll bet you a nickle your mom would glow with pride if you were to choose such a plan.

Good luck

Zach;
  The advise you have been given above from those two old coots is good advice to be sure!
   I used to make a lot of sets early and don't put the trap, lure, bait, or urine in until the day I actually trap.  I would dig the trap bed and go through the motions of making the set complete.  Sometimes I would get a surprise when I went back to put in the actual set only to find that an animal had made a visit with track and urine at the location.  Just made it easier and if he/she peed, more inviting to the next one.  Then it was quick and easy to bed the trap when I was ready.

Enjoy your 2 hard earned days off!   Sounds like you earned them.

But rdfx and others are right- if you preplan and prebait for coon,possums- you will find the reward more than equals the effort .
