Possible new (to me) cannon range in SoCal
« on: December 31, 2009, 07:42:27 PM »
Went to Burro Canyon shooting park today. I asked Mr. Rangemaster if I could shoot small cannons on the 200 yd rifle range there. He was very enthusiastic and said it was no problem, they often have guys shooting them there.

Burro Canyon is a bit more relaxed than some ranges around here; you can bring your own target stands and even shoot steel-jacketed bullets in winter/spring until fire danger is high (big plus for me, I've got a ton of milsurp with steel jackets).

Here's a pic from the benches...

And back to the firing line from 100 yds...

Kinda chilly today though. At one point a cloud blocked the sun for almost 10 minutes and I had to put on a windbreaker.  8)

 >:(....Let's see, we had high winds and rain most of the day today! Burro Canyon looks like a good place to shoot, lots of high backstops and open field of fire. So sorry you caught a chill ther and had to put your windbreaker on for 10 minutes! Happy New Year to ya! BoomLover

I'm thinking they must be a specially designed hybrid infused with penguin DNA. :)

For you guys who shoot cannons at similar style ranges, do you use fuse or some other ignition? I'm afraid if I were to use a fuse, it might blow out and land on something flamable, like the wooden benches or the shirt of the guy next to me.  :-\

My canvas shooting jacket has a linear burn on it from fuse remnants from a golf ball mortar.  The best thing to do is put an empty soda can or something like that in the path that the fuze fragment takes and catch them.

The organize shoots like AAA and NSSA require a shield.

I think I'll only be shooting cannons there. An 'area weapon' like a mortar might take out someone else's target stand. A little piece of formed 16 ga steel attached with a hose clamp over the vent should do the job.

It would be a bummer to have a fuse not set off the charge right before a line break (when all guns need to be unloaded). I'm thinking electric ignition might be safer and more reliable when there are a other shooters around. These kinds of concerns have kept me away from bringing my cannons to established shooting ranges.

Burro canyon does have private ranges that can be reserved, but it's $20 per person, $80 minimum/day. Might be worth it if I could just find someone who shoots cannons. Anyone on this forum do stuff like that?

 ;D

I normally shoot at Angeles and have never had a problem shooting artillery there.  But Burro Canyon is closer so I might consider it.  Never actually been there.
