Always tempted, but I don't want to ruin my relations with my neighbors.

As it is, they either enjoy watching the cannon fire, or tolerate it enough to not cause trouble.

There will be cannon fire today, after the traditional black-eyed pea feast. My inlaws are coming up and Pam's dad has never seen the artillery collection except in photos. He expects to see (and hear) something, and I will try not to disappoint.

I think I'll lead off with the thundermug...

I've been firing 'salutes' all day and all night long  :o - had a colonoscopy yesterday morning.  Took out a couple of small pollups and VERIFIED that I'm not full of it !   ::)

Not a peep here at midnight, but, today will be another story! An oz in the thundermug, then go for the rest!

We had to wait out the rain, and then hurry so that the inlaws could get back on the road home, so no pics or video.

But we did get off a 1 oz. salute from the 1" thundermug, and three 500 gr. salutes from the 1/4-scale Napoleon this afternoon.

We always have a bigger audience than planned. With the holiday there were extra kids in the neighborhood. It's the kids that are the saving grace here. The adults are often ambivalent. But they will support, or at least tolerate, the cannon fire as long as the kids are enjoying it.

We're not supposed to put 2 and 2 together with that statement, are we?  :o...just a co-wink-e-dink, right? What timing on the deer's part in this story! A "D" cell equals 1 5/16", nice bore size! Happy New Year to you, Irishman!

When I was a kid my dad shot his eye out with a Champian cork about 35 years ago . NOT funny at all , to the E room and a big patch over his eye for weeks .

Plus I have seen them take out Snow Owls cleaner and quicker than a .223 !

High drama and suspense all around . It was a 'revenge killing for sure'.

I didn't do anything this year - I even went to bed before midnight, since I had to wake up early the next morning for work.  Last year I shot my carronade for the first time (on my friend's carriage, since mine wasn't ready).  We had been shooting his cannon and a bunch of small arms every New Years and 4th of July, which usually drew a nice audience of his neighbors, but he decided he doesn't want to shoot in front of his house any more since his dog got so startled it knocked over his Christmas tree.

Please take care, Bob! Ruth is much too valuable an ordnance information resource, to be allowed to be put in jeopardy by an errant cork.

I’ve recently been looking for information on Indian cannons after seeing photos of some bronze beauties at Fort Nelson, Portsmouth, and I came across “The Saga of Indian Cannons” by R. Balasubramaniam on the net. While I was looking at the authors acknowledgements, a not all that rare occurrence took place; I saw your wife’s name mentioned in a book on muzzleloading artillery.

"I acknowledge the valuable academic discussions with Ruth Rhynas Brown, England; Neil Carleton of Victoria & Albert Museum, London, England; Mathew Back of Liverpool Museums, England; Dr. Peter Vemming and Lars Barfot, Denmark; Dr. Delphine Neff and Dr. Philippe Dillmann, France; Dr. Kaushik Roy, Dr. A.K. Bag and Prof. A.K. Biswas on matters related to artillery and gunpowder."
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

The one thing that you can almost always rely on research leading to, is more research.

Glad to hear your wife was okay, Bob.

That reminds me, I still haven't started building my cork mortar. ;D
