22 Long Rifle...
« on: January 01, 2010, 07:47:14 AM »
I have posted this on a couple of websites and I thought I might put it here for opinions also…

I am thinking about getting a Super 14” barrel in 22 Long Rifle caliber…

I will be putting a good ‘scope on it and my question is:

Anyone have input as to whether it will shoot 1” groups or less AT 50 YARDS from a very good rest?

I use “run-of-the-mill” ammo in a Single-Six (shoots very very good!) and I would like to use the same ammo in the Contender.  Mostly Remington cheapo stuff and Federal Champion…

Thanks…BCB

Quick answer 1" groups @ 50 yds with el cheapo ammo NO, even with a "match" chamber there are to many varables, your rest, your techneque [sp]  the scope, and you want to do it with El; Cheapo ammo.
You don't need the $ 10.00+ a box to get good ammo, Fed. 711-B, 719,CCI standard Vel. CCI sub sonic, Wolf MT,
I would get 1 box of several different brands, and try to pick a calm day to test the ammo. AND take a cleaning rod and a couple of "mops" or a good supply of patch's, NO brush's. It will take +- 10 rounds of a different brand of ammo to "season" your barrel to that ammo
Go to the 22 rimfire forum and read, join and ask, a pretty good bunch of people

I have a Contender frame with a trigger job and a factory 14 inch stainless match barrel and a set of Georgia Jim Grips and a 20x bushnell scopecheif , Best 5 shot group at 50 meters (54yards) is .283 . I have used this pistol to win rimfire rifle matches on line . I bought the frame used and traded a barrel with another member here at Graybeard to get this one , the total investment is less than $600

22pop,
You forgot to say what ammo you use and it's cost/box   I'll bet it wasn't Fed. Lighting [510]  ;D

Never did have much accuracy from my 22 barrel even tho it was in great condition. My Ruger charger was a much better 22 then the TC was.
Seems like everyone else s is doing well, hope your new one shoots well also.I was very disappointed with mine.

My 10" barrel will do about 1/2" with CCI Mini Mags.  That is all have ever shot in it.  It does have a match chamber.

I'll take exception to what is being posted. I have a 10 & 14inch bbls for my Contender and I shoot Remington bulk pack ammo and if I do my part (that is pay attention to site picture and trigger pull) I can keep my shoots under 1inch.

Lager,

What was the accuracy?  Accuracy is very subjective, but it sure sounds like your barrel may have been a really bad shooter.

Maybe a few details if you would please...

Thanks...BCB

Most any and all barrels will prefer one make of ammo over others. My 14" SS Match chambered Contender will shoot well under 1" at 50 yds. And this is with the cheap Winchester Expert Ammo.

I don't remember ever owning a Tender barrel that would NOT shoot less than an inch at 50yds.  That includes a 10" 45mag and even one of the original 357 octagon barrels.
If I agreed with you then we would both be wrong.

Is that with or without scopes.

Ever Tender barrel I have will shoot under 1" at 50yds. Most shoot under 1" at 100yds. Some shoot 1/2" or better at 100yds.

I read that also and I thought he maybe meant "would NOT"...

Yep, I have 1/2 dozen different barrels and they will all stay under 1" at 50 yards for sure...

And again, most will stay at 1" or a bit bigger, some smaller, at 100 yards...

I have a 10" bull bbl with a Match Chamber that will easily shoot less than 1" @50 using Wolf MT ammo.
It has a Swift 2X scope.
My 12" SS bbl Match Chamber will do better but has a Burris 2x7 scope.
Both are good squirrel getters.

Guess I'll brag a little too. I have a 10 inch octagon with a 4x TC scope that will do 1/2 inch at 50 yds with the right ammo. Shoots all ammo well, but groups tighten up with higher end ammo.
