Time for a bit of New Year housekeeping.
« on: January 01, 2010, 06:25:38 PM »
We had some reoccurring issues over the past year that need addressed.

Language.

GBO is a family board. Anything you post here should be fit to say to your kids and your Grandmother. If not, don’t post it. Certain words and phrases have been banned.  The banned word or phrases if entered in a post will show as some other acceptable word, phrase, (censored word) or asterisks.  Do not post alternative spellings or formatting to avoid the banned word list.  Find a better word or accept the banned word list alternative.  If I find you are trying to use alternative spellings or formatting to convey the banned word I will remove your post and let Graybeard deal with you.

Flaming

Name calling, ribbing, teasing, chain pulling are only fun if both parties agree to the fun.  But it also could be considered trolling and flaming which is prohibited conduct on GBO and can get you banned.  It is too easily misunderstood and can be offensive.  We don’t need it.

What to do if you feel you are a victim of flaming?

On the bottom right of every post is an icon to report the post to the Moderator.  When you click on this button a small window opens so you can report the post.  The window is small but you can actually type quite a bit of information in the window. If you click on the window, tell us specifically what the problem is.  No threats or innuendos, we aren’t interested. Don’t respond to the post if you report the post.  If you do respond do not retaliate.  Do not flame back.  Reported post messages go to both board moderators, all Global Moderators and all Administrators by email notification. Any of them are likely to respond. Most are more likely to let the board moderators handle the problems. But any of them can deal with the issue.

If there is someone who just rubs you the wrong way, you can ignore them.  Under everyone’s user name is an ignore button. Just click on this button and you will never see that persons post.  A word of fair warning, if you put someone on ignore and we catch you responding to their post, you will be banned.

If someone flames you, do not retaliate.  Report the post or put the person on ignore.  If you retaliate you will be subject to banning also.  If you wish to argue back and forth, or call some one out go find a school yard or a back alley, but take it away from this board. We will not referee or mediate. We will just remove your post and perhaps you.

Links.

In all the years I have been on the internet there is no subject that creates greater angst.  I get more complaints on this than any other subject; on this board and the others I moderate.  It is a complaint that constantly crops up.

The internet is just chock full of good information and this board is a good place to share that information.  We all don’t have high speed internet connection with wide screen HDTV monitors and high speed super computers.   Some folk have old computers, dial up connection and square CRT monitors, and old eyes and old computer skills.  It’s tough enough to load GBO and view it with that equipment.  To open links to get additional information especially when you don’t know what is in the link is asking too much.  Especially annoying is a post that has a topic title and a link and nothing else. So show a little common respect for others on the board.

From now on, I am going to insist on this simple bit of courtesy.  When you make a post with a link, include a simple synopsis of what is contained in the link so those with older equipment can decide before they click, if a click is worth the wait.  Any post with just a link and no explanation is going to be removed.

If you are posting a link to your photo album, post a couple of key pictures from the album and then the link.  That will also help people decide if they want to view the album.  Any photo links that are posted as a link and not an image will be converted to an image if possible.  If you post a photo link and don’t want it posted as an image say why in your post.

If you start a discussion on another forum and then post a link to that discussion here and don’t explain to us what the discussion is about and why you didn’t post the discussion here also, the post will be removed. I know sometimes discussion starts out and you may not think it of interest and then as the discussion evolves you think of us.  That’s okay, but show some basic courtesy and tell us what is in the discussion.  These types of post are not looked at in a good light.  If the discussion is not good enough to be posted here, don’t link it here.

It does not sound like a goodbye.   ???    Maybe.   :-[

For someone to leave rather than to present posts in a method that folks reading the board prefer does not sound like a rational behavior.    :'(

Hmmmmm.    Tell us it ain't so, John.

A single word, with a period.     "Bye."    Come on, John, say it ain't so! I read that right after it was posted, and thought...."Never heard him say that before, ever!" If your scanning this, we really do appreciate your huge contribution to this post, John and if you really did what you sound like, it would leave a huge hole in our forum! Never had a problem with all your posts and comments before....Maybe just a little winter break? BoomLover

That's sad to hear. I guess I'll search for some of his post on other forums. It was just kinda nice when he was here. It was kinda like "one stop shopping".

That's a shame. Rules are rules, I guess. I hope he was made aware of the new ones before his posts were dumped.

John's hands-on experience with the guns he's owned, restored and fired, his historical research and such has taught me a lot. At least he's still on other forums where we can read up on his latest adventures.

We all had opportunitity to read DD's post on housekeeping (this post) and there was some discussion publicly between DD  and John.  As moderators we make choices based, as DD has said, on feedback over time from everyone.  The rules were changed in order to serve the general readership.

Will the history of his posts go away from his profile?  There is more good information there than I've ever seen anywhere.  Can we save it?

His profile can only be deleted by Graybeard and that won't happen. He is still an active member here and his absence is by his choice and no one else.

I wasn't going to say anything, until I knew for sure that Cannonmn really did intend to stop making contributions to this board. Well, unfortunately, he is leaving, and I don't think there is any other member here whose absence would leave as big a void (IMO) as his absence is going to cause. He has decades of stored knowledge of, and personal experience with, such a large cross section of ordnance, and by that I mean artillery of differing historic periods, types, national origins, made materials, etcetera. Then there are the threads that show pieces from his incredible collection of ordnance items, from exquisite models to incredible Spanish Empire bronze mortars, and then on to one of a kind Civil War era experimental rifled breechloaders. We could then stop to consider the videos he posts of himself and Ed having a great time firing original examples of period artillery, or just plain having a good old-fashioned ball, seeing how high they can get an anvil to soar up into the sky; and the other informative videos that he records and shares here, of all the different shows he attends. I also appreciate the information he gleans (and then shares with us) from hour upon hour of archival study. This list could made longer, noting other things that Mr. M has contributed to this forum, but I'll stop here.
If its true that in any given situation, that there is always hope for a change, then I hope that there exists the possibility that "The Cannonmn" is not going to permanently leave this board, because if he does, I for one, will sorely miss John.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I for one, will sorely miss John.

Agreed!

Having known John from the gun show circuit for Close to 20 years I am sorry to see this end,

I guess I will be having to spend time elsewhere to see what he finds next.

I was hoping in the coming year see a thread on the restoration of the to 1870's era breech loaders to the point of his firing them.

As to his video collection I believe he is up to almost 100 video's quite an accomplishment when you think about it.

Also getting warnings about shady dealings by certain sites helps keep people from losing hard earned money.

He was also a sponsor here also.........

Ed -
I appreciate your concern regarding the rules.  There were two decisions made.  One, from the moderators, to support those of minimal resources by having the posts made very easy access.  (Additionally, it puts the content directly into the same server wherein posted and does not have the disadvantage of ending up with a lot of dead links over time.)  The other decision was by John, you know as much about that as I.

A VOTE simply simply says one group wins, one looses.  My personal preference is to serve everyone - to have the material as widely accessable as possible.  We do not correct other's spelling, although I will compain occasionally about DD's typing.  (There are boards that will berate uses for making spelling errors.)

I like John, I admire his expertise and his accumulated knowledge.  He is more than welcome to participate here.

when I first read that little bye I didnt really realize what was happening

NOW i UNDERSTAND THAT WE LOST HIM

this is one of the biggest lost we could have had here in my opinion
ok I have also said some bad words from time to time about the slide shows and so , but loosing this magnitude of a info source is worse then checking a few links and say a few bad words about the slide shows  ;D

hope you will be back John

Some facts of life - people come and go, sponsors come and go.

I'd like to see and hear from WES !  (I'm sure the realities of life and the intensity with which he lives his life are major factors in our not hearing from him for some time.)  Wes early on connected us to our first sponsor.

Both are alive and well and doing what they want to.  OK, we here will support them!

Fair enough. When you go to someone's house, ya gotta abide by the rules. I was just concerned that he may not have been clear on the recent modifications.

 Keep on cannonin' cannonmn.
