What a way to start the new year!
« on: January 01, 2010, 08:02:05 PM »
I don't know how this year is going to play out but if today's hunting is any indication it might not be to bad.
Deer season ends here in my part of VA tomorrow.
We still could use some more meat.
The deer have been spotty here lately.
Some days you see quite a few and others you only see a couple.
It has been a strange year deer wise this year.
The rut, what there was of it was real early in muzzle loader season.
I went out this morning with my 45-70 Handi as always along with my Win model 70 270wsm.
Only saw three.
I was able to get a nice 80 lb doe with the 45-70 at about 50 yds.
Bang flop!

This evening my youngest son wanted to go so out we went.
He had his 7x57mm Handi with him.
We had only been out about 30 minutes when we jumped two doe about 60 yds away.
He chose the larger of the two and took the shot, right through the boiler room.
She only ran about 40 yds.
He is 6 for 6 and all with Handi rifles.
His first was a very large 8pt with a 243.
The rest have been does with the 7x57.

What a way to start the new year!

Good job and nice shooting.  The deer around here have been weird in that they have been almost completely nocturnal this year.  As far as I know, there has been 2 deer that were not nocturnal on our property and my 14 yr old son shot them both.

I haven't got it dialed in yet for that distance.
20 to 25 yds maybe.
Hope to get it right this summer for next year.
