Could it be done?

I don't think the Rem 799 mini-Mauser action will take a cartridge as long as the .35 Rem.
IIRC, .223's & .204 lengths are more near their limits.
Heck, I'd like to have a mini-Mauser in .250 Savage - but even my CZ527 mini is too short.

They made them in .22-250 so the .250 & .300 Savage would fit I believe.

.358 winchester on a 798 or surplus mauser would be easier. No bolt modifications would have to be made if you used a gun that was based from a .308. Just a standard re-barrel and you could probably buy a barrel short chambered.

That would end up being too heavy and the action would be too long for the cartridge IMO.

I once sent a note to CZ to see if the 527 action would take 35 Rem. thought making a carbine in 35 Rem would be a good kids gun.
I think the best bet after what they wrote is to neck up 7.26X39 to 358 or 366 and make a 358X39, 9X39, or 9.3X39

If you search long and hard you might find a Remington 600 in 35 rem, that was a great little rifle but they are very scarce. Remington never sold many of them because most fans of that cartridge want it in a fast shooting lever, pump or auto.

Swamp,
I've got one of the Interarms MarkXs in 243. It's the standard actioned one that'll handle anything up to 30/06 length shells. I've had no problems with feeding or shell pick up.
I will have to agree with on the weight issue. This is one 243 that ain't no liteweight. Close to 9.5 pounds with the scope.

With custom modifications many things can be done.
1. Buy 799 in any configuration.
2. Sell 799, put money toward a Marlin 336D.
Or you could just buy a suitable rifle to begin with...
