the secret to make'n the 45/410 shoot...

first off, loose the choke area of the barrel.
measure 18.5" from breech... chop. that will leave you about 1/8" recess to the crown.
notice the crown area... its a joke !!!.  recrown as mentioned in the FAQ's
this cut was to enable the access to the crown and make the gun more HANDI
so you don't have to install the tube if shooting shotshells.....good birdy pattern !!!

before i continue, before someone fly's off the handle....
i did a not needed chamber cast and found no contour or partition of the chamber area out to
3.068" were the lands start to begin. like t/c owners say there 45/410's have...

so, i started out with casull brass..NOT CASULL LOADS !!!
i used standard 45 colt starting loads with trailboss powder like the cowboys do...
and used the listed cast lead bullets.

performance was exceptional....around 2.8" @ 50yrds

then i had an idea .... i mic'd a 410 3" shotshell in the area of the rim.
larger than the .460, but not much..   .010 DIFFERENCE,  .003 difference in thickness

.004 difference in diameter of casing. (brass, not plastic)     your mileage my vary  

so i got brave and loaded a .460 round with a starting charge of trailboss for the 45 colt
again.  test fired these first from a test cell that my father and i built about 26 years ago, that has been well used ever since.

i took a lint free paper cleaning towel saturated with rem oil, and laid across the breech area to
reveal any pressure blow back..... NADA !!!!!

ok, then started increasing powder charge until my velocity got to where i wanted, around 1150 fps.
still no pressure signs... in brass, primers, or blow back.

after 30 rounds fired... its time to check accuracy.  i felt very good about the physical shape of the
handi.

installed a bushnell trophy red-dot and bore sighted the old fashion way...

first 2 shots where on paper bout 2" apart... , good sign !!!!

then after trying several load configurations, the ending 7 shot group was 1.5"

now this is from a 8-11" group gun...

if you try this,  your own your own.... i had the facility to test.

and keep in mind.... NO 2 GUNS, OR THERE OPERATORS ARE CREATED EQUAL !!!

 this post was just to inform people the 45/410 can shoot....

there are other things i know i did, but i can't remember them right now, just the good stuff...

oh-yeah!!!   i tested this using a sb2 frame but , i believe a sb1 will do fine if stay'n around standard
45 colt loads...

and i did a much needed trigger job too!!!!

I have had the same thoughts about using the 460 brass.   Laid in 50 cases to try it out and now your post has me all excited to give it a try.  I'll have to get my barrel D&Ted to mount a scope rail.  Wasn't gonna chop the end off, but not sure where I put the choke tube any more so no worries there.   Like you I'm not thinking of to hot a load, just make it more usable.  Got plenty of others to make more power if needed.   DP

i found one of the major problems to be the crown....it splattered out patterns
that was not noticed within the choke area. after i chopped, i test fired a 45 colt
load... and it was not a purdy sight.  
a recrown helped by 3-4" easily. again that's my finding, yours might be better/worse.
it appeared to not have been crowned right, if it even was !!!!
