8" 44 mag Bull barrel?
« on: October 28, 2003, 01:42:58 AM »
anyone have and used an 8" barrel? Just wondering how different it is to shoot compared to a full 10". I would be deer hunting with one,,,and wonder about the muzzle blast difference. I DON'T use revolvers anymore because of the serious blast the cylinder gap can give. If resting pistol next to tree trunk [common in tree stands], the 'side blast' is bounced right back at shooter with some bark mixed in to boot.
Still thinking of best use for the 10" bull barrel I just got with an internal choke. No rib,,just standard open sight bull barrel in 44 Mag.
thanks, I appreciate the responses and opinions offered here.

well you could aleays cut it back to 8 inches then have it rechambered to a 445 s.m.  but the bark will be quite loud.
I beleave the hotshot chamber is cut a litle longer then a normal one. that i why I was thinking about rechambering it .

You may have swapped a little blast for a lot of recoil. I hated my 44 10" until I put pachmayr grip and foreend on it.  Shortening the barrel won't help.  Blast is very much a function of the powder and the load. I find that loads based on 296 and most any 240 grain or 300 grain bullet has blast that's not objectionable.

I have an 8" 44mag with integral MB machined in, it has 14" screw spacing for the forend and has a trimmed herrett forend that makes the whole package look really great, works great with a red dot site.  I really like the weight and feel of it better than my 10" and If you hotshot barrel is accurate I wouldn't hesitate to loob of a couple inches.

good luck

don't know much about the subject, but the barrel may be a good candidate to stub in front of the chamber, and add a threaded longer tube to it. i've seen them around on the net, but thats about all i know. :?
