Sights on Heritage Rough Rider
« on: January 02, 2010, 04:12:24 PM »
I have talked myself into buying a 22 cal Heritage Rough Rider.  I owned a stainless single six a few years ago and I'm kicking myself for selling it!  I know the Heritage is not the same quality, but I cannot justify the cost of a Ruger for a gun that will only be used for plinking a few times a year.

I found quite a few threads on the Heritage, but didn't find a good answer to my question.  Are the adjustable sight versions worth the extra 40 to 50 dollars?  Please share any experiences with the fixed sights.

Thanks,
Jerry

From my experience, I suspect that you may be disappointed in the Rough Rider. I bought the combo model on Black Friday. It shot way high and way right. When I called, Heritage suggested that I bend the front sight, to the right. I did, but was unsucessful in getting it to impact, where aimed. I returned it to Heritage. They did email me twice and returned the pistol, with a new front sight, in eight days. It still hits way right. I'm very disapointed in it. It has remained in the safe. If it ever warms up, I'll work with it again. If you do go the Heritage route, I suggest that you go with their adjustable sight model. I'm still looking for a used Single Six.

Powwowell, thanks for the reply.   Did some web searching and about 75% of the info I've found has been positive while the other 25% was similar to yours.  Most of the negative comments were a few years old (2003-2005) and I was hoping Heritage had improved since then.  The old adage "you get what you pay for" generally prevails but occasionally you get lucky.

Hard to find anything negative about the single six, but finding a used one has been difficult for me.  I know Gunbroker has quite a few but I'm not comfortable going that route.

I should just quit thinking so much and go buy something.

I have a Heritage Rough Rider in 17HMR. It does not have the attention to detail Quality as Ruger, however it is very accurate. I considered buying another one in 22lr/22mag on black friday but didnt have to coins to turn loose of. I also have a Ruger SBH for comparison.

I've got a 6 & 1/2" fixed sight and it is more accurate than my Single Six. I also have a 3 & 1/2" birds head that I stick in my back pocket for snake protection when out in the yard.
My next handgun purchase is going to be a 9" adjustable sight model that I will zero for Winchester Super X magnum 40 grain JHP's.
I like Rough Riders. So much that I also bought one of their 45's, made by Pietta in Italy.

Yes, because if your fixed sight gun is off POA (Like mine) then you are SOL.

Everyone, thanks for the info.  From the replies it looks like a coin toss on getting a good shooter with fixed sights.  Not sure I like those odds.

I picked up a rough rider with the 4 3/4" barrel a couple weeks ago. It was used, but was only shot a few times and I got it to carry back behind my house. I have 10 acres of woods and numerous feral cats and the occasional dogs that people dump off. So I went and shot the gun and did some sighting in and it shot to the right with different ammo, so I bent the front sight to the right very little and now it shoots right on the money from 10 yards. Today walked out back and jumped 3 rabbits and managed to get a head shot one of them at a distance of about 15 yards. So now the rabbit is in the fridge and to be cooked tomorrow. This little revolver isn't so bad, it goes bang and I know the quality isn't as great as other makes, but for the money it sure is a nice little knock around gun... ;)
