truck gun idea...
« on: January 02, 2010, 05:01:19 PM »
Ok, well I just ordered the Ultra Slug hunter from sman and it comes with a 10 ga barrel so I'm tryin to decide what I want to do with the barrel. I definately want a dedicated receiver as I don't get into swapping barrels every time I want to shoot something different. It has an extra full choke and if memory serves me correctly has like a 24" barrel. I'm assuming its for turkey hunting, which I don't do.

Here's what I'm thinking. I want to cut the barrel down to 16.5" and put it on a receiver with a youth stock (they are shorter, right?) and keep it in my truck. My question is, will that be too much gun for what I'm wanting. I want something where if I'm on the place and see a critter I can throw it out the window of the truck and kaboom...or while I'm walking the property it will give me a light weight snake/ critter gun. Am I gonna be sore(ly) disappointed first time I shoot it?

And what receiver do I need for the barrel? Sb2? Or is there a specific one for shotguns?

Thanks
Joe S.

10ga barrels(and the 12ga USH) will only fit SB2 shotgun frames, they won't fit an SB2 rifle frame or an SB1 frame.  :-\

That would be true, 18" min barrel length, 26" overall.  ;)

That's cool. I will have a gunsmith do the work so he would enlighten me but thanks for that. I don't condone, or practice anything illegal.

I've never seen a Slug Hunter, but I imagine it is pretty light as far as 10 guages go. Probably not much fun to shoot. And then you want to shorten and lighten it some more??? I don't think I would like even a shortened lightened 12 ga. single shot, a 20 would fit what you want much better than a 10. Now I could see what you are doing if you were looking for a self defense weapon. I did that once with a 12 ga, but it was just for laying around and giving me peace of mind, not for actual shooting.

The slug gun is a 12ga. It will stay as is. But I bought it with the extra 10 ga barrel he had so I want to do something with it. I will shoot it before I have it modified. If its more than I can handle I will try and trade it off for a 12. I don't care much for anything smaller than 12 ga. I don't have anything against the performance, just my personal preference.

You can always find mild kicking 12 ga loads, I don't know about a 10

You could always sell it & buy a 12 barrel, but it won't fit that frame. 12's seem to go for about $50-60 on the board. I may know of an interested party if you sell the 10.  ;)

Ten guage barrels are rare here, so much so that I'd never consider cutting one.  As for being disappointed, I don't think thats the term I'd use, more likely to be SHOCKED!   I've fired ten guages when standing, leaning into the stock-this was NOT pleasant!  I can only imagine firing one in an awkward position such as sticking out of a truck window!  No thank you mam' I prefer my shoulders attached.

I wouldn;t mind a 10 ga with a 18.5 inch barrel. through in some 3.5 inch buck shot and I'd be set. (I dont mind a little recoil ;D) dont think I would put a pistol grip on it through. I shot a surbua super shorty and didn't like that. a 12GA with a 9 inch barrel ain't right. Although it would make a heck of a concealed carry gun:)

Like I said, I will definately shoot it before modding it. Don't want to ruin it for everyone else if I don't like it.

Ruppster, I'll keep ya posted. ;)

I will also have to find a frame and stock set first. Money's a lil low for that so it will be a bit
