I just watched a show on the Outdoor Channel, dedicated to hunting with a 30-30 lever rifle with iron sights. This guy plans on taking 29 species of North American big game with this rifle, a gun he got from his father when he was a child. On this show he takes a black bear in BC at 125 yards. He has 28 species to go. As compared to many hunting shows, this is a breath of fresh air. I will try to watch every episode. The rifle is a top eject lever with standard sights, the brand I am unsure of and they do not mention it, nor the ammunition. So this is not an infomercial disguised as a hunting show, how refreshing.
The guy takes a wood burner and carves the date and animal into the fore arm of the rifle!

I'm less convinced than you. He had two different rifles in different segments of the show one a long barrel at least 24" or more and one a 20". When he burned the info into the wood I wrote him off as a nut and won't be watching again.

Really I'm not gonna be watching ANY of the hunting shows again. I had stopped long ago as they were about ten minutes of commercial, ten minutes of some guy bumping his gums cuz he thinks he looks good on film and at most ten minutes of actual footage at least four minutes of which is rerun afer the commercial of what they showed before it.

I guess I had kinda forgotten that when I recorded several recently. It sure didn't take me long to remember why I stopped watching them the first time. The bear with .30-30, Roger Ragland and then Travis Tritt did it for me. I won't be watching anymore unless at some long off future date I again forget why I stopped watching them again. Oh I almost forgot about the one where they refuse to attempt to get closer than 800+ yards and prefer it be over a thousand.

I have to agree with Bill. These hunting shows are all about selling hunting equipment. I will, on occasion, sit and watch ESPN Outdoors and all I see is Jorden, Wadell, Blanton, Ritz and a whole butch of others selling products for each other. They call themselves "Pro hunters", hell, if we had the funds and sponcers like they do we all would be "pro hunters" like they are supposed to be.

I saw most of that show twice now... entertaining.

The hunting shows seem to be becoming too Hollywood, the shows on now with a pretty girl and guy seem transparent. Overall, I like watching, but dont like this turn to "reality TV"....gag and choke as my wife would say.

I have watched a few on the telley but when I saw where he has a gun from his father which should mean the world to him, and then burn notches in it, well as bill said that was enough for me, very childesh, and as bill said too much replay and adds to be of any real value to those of us who like our guns and love to hunt and shoot and I will also say we take care of them, the guns that is.

I know people may disagree but the only hunting show I watch is Tred barta who hunts the old fashion way with a long bow. What I like about his show is not so much that he hunts with a long bow is that if he kills something or doesn't it's the hunt which is more important. In fact, on the majority of his shows he doesn't kill anything. I understand during the spring Barta suffered complete paralysis from a rare spinal stroke.
I use to watch these barnyard hunters on TV who have food plots, trail cameras linked to computers at the lodge, high tech range finders and it makes me sick. They are truly "barnyard hunters". They mind as well hunt milk cows.
I myself have gone back to iron sights and hauled my old 50 plus year old win 94 30-30, which my Dad gave me brand new, out of the safe.

doesnt he know that a 30-30 isnt powerful enought to kill all north american big game

..........i looked at the schedule and the shows this week are of him bowhunting?............

inthe 70's one year i did odd jobs and saved up $110.26.........i had a cedar chest from myrtle beach and put the money in the box and wrote in ink on the inside of the cover of my earnings. i was 14.....
my dad then took me to davidsons/cherrys in greensboro whre he had a freind who worked there and i went through at least 100 boxes and picked out the wood i liked the best......

i aint carving/ burning nothing into this gun.....if and when i ever go moose hunting or caribou hunting i am taking the 30-30 instead of my .270.....heck if they can get close enough with a bow then i can get close enought with a 30-30...........

Well, most of the shows on the outdoor channel make you feel if, you do not have the ultra super dooper magnum then you will not be able to get your buck. This year my 30-30 shot a buck antelope, mule deer buck and a cow elk, woops I for got I should have used the super dooper mag.

TC seems to spend more money on advertising and paying for writers and TV hunters to go on hunting trips than all the other gun makers combined. Still the majority of the TV hunts take place on high fenced areas and are passed off as fair chase.

Now I have nothing against high fenced hunts might ya but they should be represented as what they are not as fair chase free range hunts. There isn't much honesty in TV hunting shows just as there is no reality in reality TV shows.

I used to like Kurt Gowdy and the old American Sportsman series that used to be on every Saturday morning. They were not trying to sell you something, or intent on showing a bunch of deer and turkey "snuff shots".

T/C spends a lot on marketing but they are still in business, which is more than can be said for Knight. I can't stand the infomercials either, but I am glad I have a rifle that is still being manufactured by a company that is still in business!

never owned an encore but i am a t/c man and i do not want one....i have shot them and have freinds that have them and they can keep them......i have a contender(since 1979) and a renegade(since(1985) and a black diamond which i chose over the encore.....reason.......several freinds had firing pin problems witht the encore blackpowder adn they are just too pricey for the barrels.........

oh i do like your boxers as i am on my fourth boxer............i once had a boxer that would track deer and rabbits.....you could take her right to where you shot something and in minutes she would find it.........mack

You are correct, I do not CURENTLY own a Encore.

But I do own some from Thomson Center!! I'll venture a guess that I have owned more T/C stuff than a good bunch of the readers of this post combined! Before handis, I owned Contenders, muzzle loaders... at last count I own 31 Handis... I know the quailty AND PRICE of T/C firearms. I love that they american made. But there are MANY just as good and american made!!

T/C is nice, but they are not all that...At least not in my book.

  The hunting magazines aren't much different ! Now, I know there are some of us who may be hunting Greater Kudu or Zebra on the Serengetti plains, and some who may hunt water buffalo in Nepal or Bengal tigers in india, but those are few and far between and those lucky folks probably spend at best a total 3 weeks out of a lifetime doing it.
   Most of us are hunting deer, squirrel, coon, elk, badger, groundhogs or prairie dogs most of the time, and we're not doing it with engraved .375 H&H rifles......

   I like the down-to-earth hunting mags that deal with "reality" (IMO) such as most of us deal with.

   So; I subscribe to Fur-Fish-Game and charlie Richie's "Backwoodsman"...anybody else agree ?

Ironglow, those are the only two magazines I subscribe to. They give a lot of good info in them without the hype. I have had a subscription to both for years.

FFG is the only mag i subscribe to......and the bill is sitting on my desk.........i just wish they wouldnt put the label on the front so you could frame some of those covers but i guess thats keeps us from doing that and then we have to buy the pic.....

Regardless of how silly some of these shows seem to an experienced hunter, they serve a purpose, if they entice young people to try hunting.

Well there's no doubt CW has owned more TC, than I have cause I never wanted one. But I would venture a guess that this Winchester Model 94 3030, is quite a bit older than HE IS, and I have fired more than a few rounds thru it. Probably in the last 52 years, more than he's fired in all his TCs put together.

It was bought new in 1958, and I have been shootin it ever since.
If they would put me on the show, I'd use this one.

I don't like hunting shows, especially Jim Shockey. He makes me want to puke all over my couch. The local hunting show isn't too bad, but it really brings out the idiots and tells them where to fish. The weekend after they air a segment about a location you can walk across the lake from boat to boat.

id like to know where so of those idiots come from. Do they just have enough money from daddy to do some fliming and submit it for approval. I chuckle everytime i see somebody like buck mcnealy or that hot blond they have hunting in africa. I have forgot more about guns loading and hunting then the two of them put together. I can see them using someone like craig boddington as hes well known (although i dont care for him) or jim wilson or a few others but it seems like 3/4s of these shows have self proclaimed hunting experts that nobodys even heard of. Bow hunting shows are even worse for this. Question of the week is how do i become an expert so someone will pay me to go to africa to hunt the big 5 with a handgun?

I agree Lloyd. When I say I have been huntin, and shootin the same rifle for 52 years, it is not a bragg, it's just a fact.
I also fell for the gun rag writers propaganda in my youth, until it occured to me after spending thousands of dollars on the latest gun or gear, that what I was doing in my youth was working.
How did a 40ish guy get to be an expert on my 52 year old Winchester? How did he learn more about it in his short life, than me and my half century plus EXPERIENCE with it.
Yea, I have been shootin the 30 WCF, aka the 3030 Winchester for 52 years, and in the same rifle. Am I an expert? Hell I don't know. What's an expert?
Same thing with other aspects of huntin. I was in the woods at 5 years old. Now I'm 60, and have been huntin all these years. I was huntin and gettin MORE EXPERIENCE, when he was in college gettin his degree in journalism.
They make me tired.

Oh! And by the way. The marks you see on my rifle, ARE NOT NOTCHES FOR GAME KILLED. IT'S 52 YEARS OF "WEAR", ON WHAT STARTED AS A NEW GUN 52 YEARS AGO.

That's by far, the best notches to have..and those are all honorable..maybe a bit of barbed wire, a splinter on a liveoak being used as a shooting brace or a tumble into dry creek bed...

BTW: If you're selective, you can see more hunting action on certain 2 minute videos posted on youtube, than you get on a whole hour of the LL Bean outfitted guys on cable..
