Stevens 200 in .223
« on: January 02, 2010, 06:21:43 PM »
I picked up a Stevens 200 in .223 today and started working on it right away. The trigger pull was factory set at 5lbs. and I was able to get that safely down to 3.5lbs. The change will help a lot, but to be honest I think I've become spoiled by the triggers on my Tikka T-3 and on my Remington Mod. Seven rifles. I'm considering a Timney trigger for this rifle so that may definitely be in it's future. With the trigger done I moved on to the stock using a Dremel to remove enough material out of the inside of the fore end to allow me to lay two pieces of 1/8" square key stock with one going down each side from the tip of the fore end back to the seat for the recoil lug. I used a plastic epoxy to secure them in order to stiffen up the fore end. Once that was firmed up I removed all the hardware from the stock and sprayed two coats of an adhesion enhancer on the stock. It then got two coats of Rustoleum multicolor textured paint, two coats of Krylon O.D. ultra-flat paint and followed up with two coats of clear matte to seal it all up. Nothing fancy, but it's a nice improvement on the original gray stock. Once I get it all back together I'll post a photo. I'm mounting a Simmons Aetec 4-16x44 SF scope on the rifle. I'm hoping to get decent accuracy, at least enough to use this as a light weight varmint/predator rifle.

Keep us updated, I've really been looking at one for the same purpose. I just need to get past the internal mag hangup I have. Thanks

I bought one of these about 2 years ago, to have something lighter than my Savage 10FP. I put a BSA catseye 3.5X10X40 on it and was shooting sub MOA out of the box with winchester white box 45gr hollow points. So I figured if it's shooting that good I don't need to fix anything.

I just got one used.....It has a aftermarket trigger installed which is pretty nice.  I put a Bushnell 3200 elite 10x on it.  Shoots like a dream.....  I even put some cheap wolf through it and it shot 2" @ 100 with that ammo.....it's a keeper.

I haven't gotten to shoot the rifle yet, but I did mount and bore sight the Aetec scope. It is as clear and bright as my Leupold Vari-X II or the Nikon Buckmasters that I have on other rifles although the power adjustment is a bit stiff. I don't think the .223 will be a much of a test of it's resistance to recoil. I bought it online for $79.95 which I think was a steal.

Well here's some photos. Like I said nothing fancy, but I like it better than the original gray. The textured paint worked out real well underneath the flat OD. Once I can get to the range I'll be sure to post here with the results.

thank's for the pic's. does the texture paint make the rifle more easy to grip? mine with the original stock seem's slick or hard to grip with glove's on.

You can get a good grip anywhere on the stock now, not just the checkered areas.
