Hog with a cap & ball?
« on: January 03, 2010, 01:03:37 AM »
I was just wondering if anyone has taken down a moderately sized hog with a .44 cap & ball revolver? I assume you'd have to get pretty close to it?

I read an article on it once.  The guy used a Walker.

I read that book when it first came out. They hunted with the 45 acp and the old 190 grain Super Vel load too. In the book Stopping Power by Marshall and Sanow they have a chapter on the cap and ball revolver. In their testing the 44 round ball out of a Walker was more like todays Magnum handgun loads.

Yes I have killed a 200+ hog with a cap and ball.
It was around 1976 and I was too young and Stupid to know the danger I might face.
I was hunting Three Lakes WMA in central Florida. I was using an Old Army Ruger with FFFF and round balls.
I spotted the hog bedded down about 30 Yrds away and fired . The hog charged and I fired Three more times
before the hog fell dead about 3 feet from my feet.
With the right gun and a well placed shot it can be done.
As for me I just got lucky
