Sex offender busted

Got a call from my buddy in Florida this morning.  We discussed my arrival to his house in two weeks.  Then I could hear someone in the background yelling something.  Then he said "Let me call you back, I got an old mama bear about to start biting heads off, and I'm the only one that can calm her down".

20 minutes later he called me back, and we continued our discussion.  Then I asked why his daughter was so upset.  His reply was that they had lots of drama New Years Eve.  His daughter is a wonderful woman.  She is always so calm and understanding.  I just love her.  She has two girls 20 and 17.  The oldest is sort of a wild child.  Partyed too much at college, then was requested not to come back next semester.  She came home, got a job, and moved into her own apartment.  She broke up with her long time boyfriend, and started dating an older man.  She is 20 he is 30.  They decided to get married.  Her Mom was not too thrilled, but said she is 20 years old, old enough to make her own decisions.  So the entire family, Mom, Dad, Sister, Grandma, and Grandpa, all got together and went to the court house New Years Eve for the wedding.

Just as the wedding is getting underway the police walked in arrested the groom for parole violation.  That's when they found out he is a registered Sex Offender.  OOps, Mom is running around like an old Grizzly Bear, ready to protect her offspring.

Maybe things will be calmed down by the time I get there.  Never did find out what the parole violation was, really do not care, just glad he is off the street, and maybe the wedding will not take place now.

Yep, there are thousands of registered sex offenders out there.  The worst kind are the child molesters.  For years Oklahoma refused to make a sex offenders database available to the public.  Then congress passed the federal law named for Dru Sjodin.  It is called the Dru Sjodin sex offender registry.  Oklahoma then reluctantly put a sex offender registry online.

I do think most states paint sex offenders with to broad a brush.
I don't think a 19 year old boy, and a 16 or 17 year old girl having consensual sex, should brand the boy a sex offender, but it can and will happen, and lump him in the same data pool as a Rapist or child molester.

I was on a jury several years ago, that sent a young man to prison for 5 years on  child molestation charges that were in my opinion very weak.. The prosecutor worked hard for the conviction, and the court appointed attorney (A JOKE) did absolutely nothing for his client. One other jurist and myself thought the evidence was too week to convict, but the state only needed 10 out of 12 to send him to prison.

Once a person is found guilty of being a sex offender, the stigma will always remain.
I think we should be very careful, and weigh the evidence thoroughly, before convicting someone of being a sex offender.

 I agree I had a friend that had been out drinking  and stopped at 2 am to take a leak. The cops stopped and got him for indecent  exposure. He had to register as a sex offender! Like most things they go crazy with some thing that should be a good thing.

I have some real problems with placing a label on somebody for life.When that person is convicted and serves his time, he has paid his debt to society.That is not the case in the sex offenders life.They have their names posted on the intranet and are prohibited from being in certain areas or living in certain areas.In the case of a sex offender who repeats his violation he should be casterated upon the second offense.And any subsequent offense he should be imprisoned for life.How does this type of treatment aide in reabilitating them.If you kick your dog every time you see it, it doesn't take that dog very long to change his atitude toward you.Maybe the correct way to handle this offense is to declare it as a capitol offense and demand the death penalty on the first offense.The one thing that would accomplish is lack of repeat offenses.

They have taken this stuff too far.  Now kids are being arrested and charged with child pornography for sending nude photos of themselves in text messages to their friends. 

I think that after a non-violent sex offender is free for a certain number of years he should be taken off the registry.   If an adult guy is charged with a violent rape he should stay on the registry forever.  The very worst kind of sex offender is a serial child molester/child rapist.  These scumbags almost never stop offending and should never be released from prison.

The first thing she did was look up any possibly dates on the local sex offender website at the state law department.
She was glad she did about the second guy who asked her out.
She's got three children, all my darlings, and she wasn't about to let one of those scumbags close to them.
I think most states have online databases now, worth checking out.

well before i had to take care of my wife..it was widely know by anyone who would do something to any of my grandkids ..that it was gonna be the day i went out in glory.. with him or her layin dead at my feet..
 i made it a point to make sure they knew i wouldn t quit hunting them .. and they  know i woulda done it..
 might still as karry would be put in a home ,,but who knows ,she might just forget me at this stage ..
 that if god is kind.. an believers know he is..slim
 im admitedly not wise whan it comes to hurtin my kids or grandkids..i admit that.. let god judge me..

I don't think anyone could fault you for that.  People are protective of their families.  Most of the criticism for the sex offenders registration comes from less clear cut cases.  A 17 year old guy sleeps with his 15 year old girlfriend for example.  In this case, yeah, I'll agree that the girl is probably a bit on the young side, but honestly, that's teenagers being teenagers.  If her parents find out though he could end up in jail and as a registered sex offender for the rest of his life.  I just can't agree with a system that puts such a guy under the same level of constant suspicion as an actual child molester.

There is some danger too in jumping to conclusions though..  As a society we have become VERY knee-jerk when it comes to the issue.  Innocent until proven guilty is out the window on molestation accusations as far as society is concerned, and even if someone proves their innocence people still just see it as the system failing.  And kids have learned this.  About 15 years ago, there was a local guy named "Elmo".  I didn't know him but my dad was friends with him.  His next door neighbor's daughter claimed that he'd molested her.  Her dad walked next door and shot him dead.  A few days later as the police are investigating the matter she admits that Elmo never had molested her and that she just just made it up because he'd done some something to maker her mad.  Her dad went to jail (not sure how long - just know he went) and an innocent man died because this little brat knew that all you had to do to ruin a man you didn't like was to scream molestation.

It's a tough call, but my opinion is simple: let the courts do their job.  If the person is still a danger to society - DON'T let them out of prison.  Simple as that.  They're either rehabilitated and don't need to be on some watch list, or they're still dangerous and need to be locked up.  If they molest a child (clear cut cases where we're talking an adult molesting a young child - not an older teenager sleeping with a younger one), then lock them up for life - or apply the death penalty if the state allows it.

I mean we literally let out murderers from prison with less suspicion than this.
