28 L'Amour books and stories turned into movies.
« on: January 03, 2010, 08:51:53 AM »
Was watching TV yesterday, TCM was playing a western movie staring Sean Connery, Shalako was the movie.  Got to making me thinking about how many actors I have seen in L'Amour movies.  And then how many were made.  So I looked it up, there was 28 of them, staring the likes of John Wayne, Tom Selleck, Sam Elliot, Sean Connery, Billy Zane, Keith Carridine, Sophia Loren, Anthony Quinn, and the list goes on and on.

Even Bob Hope.

I knew there was a reason I liked his books.

I've sure enjoyed his books over the years, and the movies have been enjoyable also.

I musta' read everything he's written at least twice.  I once passed on a deal to buy a leather bound set of his books..What a mistake.  In my book, best western author I've read.

his books are very good and i have enjoyed many of them. it was said he researched the areas he wrote about extensively. i took one of his books written on the area i live in and sure enough he included many places you will not find on present day maps and only in you lived in the area would you have any knowledge of them. even some of the local history stories long forgotten. it was this ability to weave the truth with his fiction into an all asborbing tale that made him such a a great writer.

Did you read his auto-biography, "The Education of a Wandering Man"?  Very good reading.

Very great writer! I love his books. I have several know and hope to one day have all the ones he has written. I have not read any in a while though I have been stuck on reading William Johnstone books.

Redtail1949:  While living in Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico, I did look for some ot the places mentioned in his books.  One most memorable was a well out in dessert west of Las Vegas.  Using Dirt Bikes and L'Amour's book we found that well, along with the ruins of a bunch of wagons.  When the charector in the book was crossing the dessert he noticed the wagons.  Going to the wagons he found the well.  We also went out looking for ghost towns in the Arizona Dessert, they were there just as mentioned in his books.

I liked Zane Gey as a kid. Don't find it as good anymore though. He seems to lack the adventure in comparision to me.

yep his descriptions of southern colorado and northeastern new mexico were spot on. only locals with interest in history would even know of the places he described so perfectly.

He did his research by living in the area he was writing about, to make it as accurate as possible.

That's probably because Grey was a New York city dentist, whereas L'Amour's early life was much like that of his characters -- a footloose wanderer, miner, boxer, laborer, sailer, and soldier.

A friend of mine worked for game and fish here in Arizona. Zane Grey had a hunting cabin near Payson, Arizona. From what my friend told me. Grey demanded all kind of freebies and the like from Game and Fish because he was a famous person. So not unlike personalities from today.

I just picked up one of his paper back books at an antique store this past week end. This store had a bunch of his books. I purchased the one that had the best looking cover on it... a pack string riding out into the high country....My son grabbed it from me when I showed it to him, so he will read it first.
