Primer shortage
« on: January 03, 2010, 01:32:28 PM »
I have been watching the MidwayUSA website for the last 10-12 months.  Their listings for all of the major primer manufacturers have been listed as "Out of Stock, No Backorder".  No option to get on the waiting list even.  Have they not received any primers for the last year?  Unbelievable, since the gunshows have them and Gunbroker has listings for them.

Yea, if you're reloading shotshells, muzzleloaders, or BMG's.  "Out of stock" on most everything else.

Shotshell primers have been available all the way through 09 locally.  We are now starting to see some staying on the shelves in everything except Large Pistol and Large Rifle.  Some are there once in a while, but I use Winchester WLP and WLR and I haven't seen either in almost a year and I paid $28/1,000.

I saw lots at a couple of tables at the gunshow yesterday, prices were typically $35-$50 per thousand!!  :o  I'm hoping this turns into the same situation after the scare in the '90's.  Prices ended up higher, but not this high afterward and the shelves stayed stocked.

Powder Valley seems able to ship most any order within two weeks. When I spoke with them they said they were getting primers in at that interval and each time they've shipped out to me what I have ordered. I'm very well stocked on primers again.

To be honest with you, I've had much better luck shopping locally for primers.  It seems the mega mail order outfits are always out.  I took me alomst 6 months to bet my primer order from Cabela's.  I've had decent luck at gun shows, too.

Scheels has had primers for quite some time. They were limiting you to 1000 per size at 29.00/1000. When I was there just before christmas their shelfs were completely full. The local mom & pop dealer says he can't get them, go figure. JamesIII

I paid $25.50 per thousand at Powder Valley plus shipping of course. To keep the price reasonable you need to order a bunch so you can spread the shipping cost out among them. But if you buy locally you have to add 8% to 9% which tends to add up to as much as shipping or more.

I've found darn few locally and none at realistic prices with limits of 100 per customer mostly. Those folks doing that will never sell me a primer again regardless of the situation.

Not to much problem finding them around here.
Most are on the shelves except the CCI BENCHREST.
Didn't pay much attention to the price since I am well stocked.

I have not been able to find squat in primers in southeast Texas! Now before Christmas We went to visit a daughter in Lafayette, La. Went to Lafayette shooters(i think its the name) and could have bought a truck load of cci primers. I did buy a thousand LR, and will get more soon but they are about $36.00 a thousand with tax. I tried to be cool but i almost danced when i saw the stack of primers on the shelf! Kinda like when I first saw snow when I was a kid!
