Erection Problems Linked to Restless-Leg Disorder, Study Shows

Jan. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Erection problems are more common among men with a disorder that causes sufferers to have an irresistible urge to move their legs than those without the condition, a Harvard Medical School study found.

Erectile dysfunction was 78 percent more likely in men with symptoms of restless legs syndrome than those without them, and was most common in sufferers with the most severe symptoms, the researchers said today in the journal Sleep. It’s likely both disorders are caused by a common mechanism, they said.

The study is the first to probe the connection between erectile dysfunction and restless legs syndrome, or RLS, two conditions that have been linked to abnormally low levels of dopamine, a chemical that relays signals in the brain. RLS, a brain disorder that afflicts about 10 percent of Americans, can cause problems falling or staying asleep, according to the Rochester, Minnesota-based Restless Legs Syndrome Foundation.

“This finding indirectly supports a role of dopamine” in restless legs syndrome, Xiang Gao, a research scientist at the Boston-based Harvard School of Public Health, said in the study. More research is needed to clarify the relationship between the disorder and erection problems, and explore the biological mechanisms of the association, he said.

Erectile dysfunction affects as many as 30 million men in the U.S., according to the National Institutes of Health, which funded the study.

Gao and colleagues studied data from 23,119 men between 56 and 91 years old. About 4 percent had restless legs syndrome and 41 percent had erectile dysfunction. Those who had symptoms of RLS between 5 and 14 times a month were 16 percent more likely to have erectile dysfunction. The men with symptoms occurring more than 15 times a month were 78 percent more likely to have the condition, the study showed.

:o This is disturbing news.  I have restless leg syndrome and it's a real pain in the butt.  Just as I'm about to fall asleep one of my legs will suddenly jerk waking me up. I often wake my wife up to when my leg jerks.  It's a very strange sensation and difficult to describe.   Thankfully I don't have the other problem mentioned.

BRETT. My wife had jumpy legs at bedtime for many years. We tried tonic water as a friend suggested. It has quinine in it and helped a lot. Another trick was to put small bars of hand soap under the bottom sheet at various places. I know it sounds nuts, but it works. You have nothing to lose by trying it. We just save the last bit of well used bars and stick them in the bed. A lady at work said her husband suffered with restless legs for years and she heard about the soap trick and did it but didn't tell him til later. She said that after only 3 days his problem with jumpy legs had completely stopped. It works. POWDERMAN.  ;D ;D

Before I had my sleep apnea diagnosed my wife said my legs, as well as most of my body, would jerk when I slept.
Got the cpap machine and we both sleep better. Don't know if one has anything to do with the other.

Erectile dysfunction is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease.  Both conditions are caused by the disruption of the activity of nitric oxide, a molecule produced by blood vessel walls that enable arteries to expand.  If you have an erectile dysfunction I recommend you talk to your doctor immediately as it may be an indicator for something more serious.

Some of the contributing factors to this problem are diabetes, high blood pressure, surgeries that may have severed nerves to the (censored word) and SMOKING.  Smoking is perhaps the largest contributor to male erectile dysfunctions, it causes hardening of the arteries and prevents them from expanding……………..gentlemen, something to think about, is that smoke worth it? ::) ::) ::)

Indeed.  Particularly Viagra and Levitra.  They go on auto-pilot (erection without cause or stimulation) for a few hours and sometimes can cause issues (those commercials saying if you have an erection for more than 4 hours aren't just jokes).

Cialis is a bit better IMHO.  It lasts in the system longer, and only "helps out" in that you still have to have some nudging to start the process.  Also lowers blood pressure as a bonus (in much of Europe it can actually be prescribed as a blood pressure medication on it's own).

Always best to check with a doctor though.  Depending on other health factors you might just be past your time for such things.

Oh to be a seventh grade boy again, sitting in the back of class with a history book on my lap to hold it down.  It was on auto pilot then! :)
