new H&R Ultra hunter .45-70?
« on: January 04, 2010, 03:46:32 AM »
Any of you boys have one of the new ones, with the thumbhole stock?  I have a 1895 Marlin GG, that I've had/used for years.  Because my son hunts exclusively with Handis[including Africa], I'm giving serious consideration into getting one.  I think it would be a whoopa** rifle for hunting hogs from a blind, with a big scope. Give me your impressions, or would you just go with the standard Handi, in .45-70.

I just bought a new 7mm-08 for my deer rifle, but as soon as funds allow I WILL have one of those Ultra Hunter SS for hogs and bear!
Live simple. Hunt Hard. Love Life.

I thank God everyday for my loving wife and all the fond memories of hunting with my Papa from a child until now.

Please take time to take a kid hunting, it will be a life long memory and blessing for both of you!

I've got one of the Buffalo Classics in 45-70. It shoulders quite nicely.
I've got a thumbhole stock on my litle savage 17 and really like the way it feels.
But to be honest for a big bore I kind of prefer the traditional feel of a regular stock.
I don't think you would go wrong either way though if you like the thumbhole.

Yup, love mine, did a little stock swapping, the cinn lams come with a thin recoil pad, I swapped out the camo lam from my 7x57 which has a Pachmayr Decelarator on it. I shoots excellent with Win factory and handloads using Barnes Ruger data for the 300gr TSX-FB.

But you can't go wrong with any H&R 45-70, they're one of the must have chamberings.  ;)
