model 4 .270 accuracy problems
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:11:16 AM »
my remington model 4 .270 is not grouping well. I found the scope base and rings all tight
but the forend had a crack in it and I can feel play in it. Can this cause the 6" groups at
100yds? Thanks.

if it has actual felt movement then under recoil i could see how that would affect accuracy , everytime you pull the trigger the recoil shifts the point of aim. even if the movement is very very minimal at the muzzle end , it can be inches and even feet off of target at longer distance ranges.  how much play or wiggle is there?
remember , a 1/16 " at muzzle travels further away 300' down range and only increases the further it goes.
that 11-pointer was too perty to let you have it - ( dale earnhardt )

capnbo,
Twenty years ago I had a brand new Remington Model 4 in .308. The fore stock (Rem calls it For-End I believe) screw shot loose about every 10-15 shots. When the fore stock was loose the gun behaved as you describe. I bought an aftermarket for-end screw that supposedly fixed the problem. It did, the rifle never shot loose and held around 2 MOA all day long. The cracked fore stock may be due to overtightening or a missing for-end cap and or spacer. The Remington site has free and downloadable user's manuals with exploded parts diagrams. My two cents, hope it helps.

Thanks for the replys. The forend is split on the side. Any recommendations other than Remington for replacement? The barrel does not appear to have any play in it, just play in the forend.
