45-70 recoil - 32" vs 22" vs cut down shorty vs ?
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:17:51 AM »
I am a recoil wimp. Can shoot trapdoor loads 1 handed and scoped from the bench for as long as I can get free time, but do not enjoy anything more robust.  Wondering what ordering a 32" barrel would do for recoil. Turn Marlin loads into trapdoor loads? I assume that a shorty would do just the opposite.

From what I've read on here loading the stock will help reduce the recoil some.
I reload so I'm just going to play with different loads until I find one that does what I want and feels tolerable.

Going from a 22" to a 32" barrel with trapdoor loads would probably lower the recoil due to the added weight of the barrel.   Velocity increases from 22" to 32" barrels is rather low, typically resulting in diminished increases because pressures have already started dropping substantially even with stout loads.   Trapdoor load versus per inch of barrel increases dont gain much in velocity to increase recoil much, and the added weight of the barrel could offset that gain.

Velocity increase with the right bullet combination will be 150-200fps higher in the BC barrel over the 22" Handi barrel, H322 and the 350gr Hornady bullet is one of those combinations that I've compared, ~1800 vs 2000+fps. Recoil in either can be negated with a little lead in the butt stock or a mercury recoil reducer which is the better way to go in my comparisons, I've shot a lot of hot loads off the bench long before I got a Leadsled, a little extra weight always helps, but so does shooting in an upright posititon so you aren't leaning into the gun and your body can move back with the recoil freely. A good recoil pad and a Past Magnum shoulder pad rounded out my bench work recoil abatement methods.  ;)
