Winter camping

Has anyone done any yet this year ?

I used to when I was younger , liked being out in the peace & quiet and wake-en up to a fresh fallen show .

Last time was some years back , down in the D Boone Nat Forest , we hiked in on a friday morning and awoke to 8" of fresh powder on Sat , you could tell were every little critter had been , only problem was taking a bath , not a big fan of busting the ice to jump into the stream .

Nothing like waking up and finding your shoes full of sleet. Ahhhh the memories.  I haven't been camping in 2010 yet, but the tents are calling me.

My brother & I try to do it once a year. Pack in light. Daypack with sleeping bag & tarp. We bring 22s or something to that effect. This year I ll be taking my little 22 hornet handi. Great way to get out of the house when cabin fever kicks in. One year we had a about 40 deer move thru just before we made camp. That was petty cool.

Now in my 50's and a Scout leader my thoughts are "I'm brave....and I'm bold....But you're first!

Have fun I'll be thinking of you as I sit in my A frame with a good fire, a strong drink and watching the snow come down.

We are getting ready to go in a couple of weeks over in Indiana. A bunch of us go every year in January or February. Last year it was -9 the weekend we went and we had a great time. I started my sons going with me when they were young and even though they're grown now with families of their own we all still get together on the annual winter camp out. We used to back pack in the Red River Gorge area every winter too. Nothing better than waking up to find a layer of fresh snow on top of the sleeping bag

How true.
I go at least once a winter with a couple of guys I grew up with. We are all in our late 40's early 50's now,  It's been a pretty cool way (no pun intended) for us all to have stayed in touch throughout the years.

My brother in laws parents own 50 wooded acres in West Harrison, right across the Ohio/Indiana line from Cincinnati. We have a camp setup out there. We're hoping to get out there in the next couple of weeks. It's hard to find a weekend when there isn't one of the guys that has to work though. We usually take at least one chain saw so we have plenty of firewood to keep the fire going all weekend. We built a small cabin out there but a lot of times we just lay out by the fire and sleep if it's not raining.

Last time I did a winter camping was bout 5 yrs back. Brother-inlaw and I went gold panning in Robinsville, NC. We parked on a creek and he slept in his truck and I in my tent. Started snowing the next morning while we were looking for another creek and decided we'd best head for home as it was really coming down.
 Planning a hike into the Sipsey Wilderness for next month and hoping to make it a camping trip. We'll see.
