Remington 700 .308 VLS on lay away. Brought it home
« on: January 04, 2010, 11:54:35 AM »
Just put a Used rem 700 VLS 308 on lay away. Came with a leupold VXII 6-18 on it. Good condition. Nice looking stock. Figured with the glass on it $775 was a pretty good price. Ive got a SA SPS stock I was think about switching them out. to lower the weight on it. But will see how it shoots first. Is this rifle gonna be a shooter or what. Whats you guys opinion on these.

Forgot to mention . this was my gift to me for quitting smoking 3 mths ago ;D ;D ;D ;D

Awesome gift and good for you for quitting! It is the best shooter I've ever come across in all the 700s I have the pleasure of owning. It's what I was shooting the most when I registered here at GB 5 years ago, hence my user name  ;D

Don't get all worked up over whether or not you should bed it, switch stocks, remove the pressure point upfront(If it has it.. as most VLS do unless the previous owner removed it), yada yada. Just shoot her and if she's shooting consistent .5" groups like mine, DO NOT TINKER WITH IT! Please!!

It's also the rifle that was my test piece in regards to my own trigger job and it was worth it. I have some pics floating around somewhere....

Here she is with the SWFA Super Sniper 10x42 on her.....

Nothing but factory ammo down the tube which brings up another topic...

I have never had a rifle that loved all ammo shot thru it, my VLS loved any kind of remington or federal ammo straight off the shelf, from target to hunting to match ammo, it didn't prefer one over another. I wish all rifles were like that!

Sniper what weight bullet were you shooting. Ive got some factory remington 150 grain corlocts I was gonna try. But long term Im gonna be reloading for this one. I was looking at either 168 grain or 175 grain bullets.

American Eagle 150grain FMJ
Federal Power Shok 150grain soft points
Remington Core Lokt 150 grain
Federal Match 168grain Match HP
Black Hills 168grain Match HP
Hornady 168grain Match HP
Hornady A-Max 168grain
Remington Scirroco 165 grain

It loves them all but as you know, every barrel has it's own personality, but you asked so there's your answer :)

You'll have to get it out to the range and see what yours likes, keep me in the loop!

Ive got some Federal match brass on the way. I figure  some seirra 175 match kings is where Im gonna start. It will be a mth or so before I can get it out of lay way. Unless my brother buys my rem 700 .223. Kinda sad gotta sell a gun to buy a gun, but I didnt wanna wait on this one. ;D ;D.  Hey hows yours do of a bipod. Cuase if I wanna shoot past 200 yards I gotta walk out to a lttle valley where I can get a 300 yard shot. So I ll be using a bipod

I've gotten accustomed to doing all my long range shooting/hunting using a bipod. I've got a collection of them and I swear by the Harris swivel models. I think we've all sold a gun to get another, heck I still do that  if need be ;D

Got it home. Went out back for a little impromptu range session. Total of 12 rounds factory remington 150 corlocts. First 3 shots getting used to trigger ''pretty heavy'' & fouling shots ;D about an 1.8 inch group. Next 7 into a ragged hole measuring outside to outside JUST under 3/4 of  inch. Feeling real good about my purchace at this point. Decided to shoot with a bipod. The only bipod I have is a Harris 12 inch. Not real comfortable behind it. Was having trouble not yanking the trigger. Shot a 2.5 inch group >:(. Oh well. That heavy laminated stock sure does soak up some recoil. But man its heavy. That may have to go

Congrats on your purchase.  If you still have that SPS stock do yourself a favor and keep it off of your rifle.  I know it is lighter, but plastic stocks that are built with the purpose in mind of keeping production costs down dont normally do too well in the field.  They are absolutely too weak, and will flex with even relatively light pressure, changing barrel harmonics and points of impact.

diggler. Ive already decided. I switched the stocks on it. It definetly lightened it up. but your right that SPS stock is flimsey. So its back in the laminated stock. I just got my hands on some lake city M118LRs. Gonna see how those shoot. Waiting on dies to start reloading some Hornady 168 JBTHPs.  I think The only thing I am gonna do to this rifle is a trigger job. Theres no creep , no over travel. But it is heavy. Im betting 8 lbs. I dont think this gun has been shot alot. So Im gonna put 50 rounds or so through it. & hopefully it will lighten up. If not its going to the gunsmith.

Remmy triggers are a piece of cake to work on, message me if you are unsure.  Depending on your budget I'd look into a used H-S Precision take-off stock off of another website, which should go for around $200-250 depending on condition.  I wouldn't use another B&C stock even if it were to play baseball with horse apples.

Don't be surprised if that Lake City stuff doesn't give you quite the groups you are dreaming of as it is not a precise as a handload, but it still should be better than factory hunting ammo.

SniperVLS...Try an Atlas Bipod...your thoughts on Harris might just go up in smoke, as will you wallet when you see how much one costs.

diggler Do you think I should wait  on the trigger job & see if it lightens up after 50 rounds or so. Or does a heavy trigger stay heavy. I just read nonyas post on adjusting remington triggers. Seems simple enough. Now if you lighten trigger pull do you have to adjust the other 2. I just got some Hornady 168 hpbts loaded. The only powders I had on hand were W748,,IMR 4350,,& 4064.  So I got a couple loads for each.  I need to pick up some Varget

I've done it before where you only back out the spring tension (trigger pull) screw.  As long as you only want to go down to around 2 1/2lbs or so that should be fine.  Also, for safety I have a bit of a ritual where I do each of the following 10 times to ensure that the hammer doesn't fall unintentionally:  Cock the rifle, cycle the bolt, put the safety on fire and then safe, and finally smack the back of the action off of my knee fairly hard.  If the hammer doesn't fall you should be safe.

Remington will either not warranty the rifle, or charge you for a new trigger if you have to send it in for warranty work.  Either cross your fingers and hope for the best or ensure that your rifle isn't going to be a lemon by firing it a bit first.

Just my .02 (and I definitely could have written the first paragraph better...I'm tired at the moment, sorry).

I had a Rem 700 .308 win that had the Hogue stock on it.......HORRIBLE STOCK.
The stock put too much flex and grouped 3 inches at 50 yd with Federal ammo.  I have heard simular outcomes with the SPS stocks in all calibers.  I put a Bell and Carleston stock and with Federal 180 gr Nosler Partition it now shoots sub MOA 5 shot groups at 100 yds.  My trigger set at 3.0 lbs thanks to the X Mark trigger.

ems Im gonna be sticking with my heavy laminated beast of a stock for now. This is gonna be a paper hunting gun. So weights not an issue"for now" .  Im hoping to set this up for shooting out to 500 yards this year. My goal is to be able to hit a 6 inch target at 500 yards before summer. Then next year go past that hopefully to 1000 yards.  ::)We,ll see.  ;D. Right now working up loads , possibly doing a trigger job. Maybe bed the stock. Its got potential. My first time out with it, all I had was some factory corlocts. It put 7 of them into an 3/4 inch ragged hole outside to outside. So Im thinking Im off to a descent start.

Rifle should be capable of that now.  Might want to invest that money into the shooter (i.e. ammo for practice).  Besides, heavy stocks are a lot better on your shoulder for target shooting.

thats the hard part. getting time to shoot. & finding a place to shoot that far. Ive got a 100 yard range behind the house, but gotta drive a hour to shoot further than that

I think Im on to something. I went ahead & got some varget. Loaded up a couple different loads. Lightened up the trigger a bit. Not alot but its better than before. I dont find my crosshair moving as Im pulling the trigger.  Varget &  hornady 168 bthp all went under an inch. Best group was .4 CTC . The other groups were good but with flyers, they were at .8 to 1 inch. 2 would be touching then the flyer. I tried some of the Lake city . I read on 6mmbr.com that you could seat the bullets .020 deeper to break the seal on the waterproofing. That would tighten the groups up a bit. Not sure if it did , I fired 4 of those seated deeper right at .6 than 4 not seated deeper at .75. But to be honest that small of difference could be me yanking the trigger. Real happy so far but like said above ,shooter needs more trigger time ;D.

Glad you are enjoying your rifle.

You can't have a flyer in a three shot group though.  ;D
