red dot parallax

I just got a tasco red dot 1x scope to put on my 357 handi. I was looking through it and at about 40 feet the dot moved about 6 inches depending on if in center of lense or at extremes of sides. Is this normal? I thought I had heard before that as long as the dot is visible it is suppose to be on target. Looking forward to info as this is my first reddot.

Mueller red dots claim to be "parallax free" and when I was at Cabellas a few weeks ago the Bushnell Trophy Red Dot seemed to be as well.

Some are, some aren't.

appreciate the replies. I got the one with the solar cell on top, so should not have to use batteries untill low light.  I guess if I mount it far forward and have any kind of cheek weld at all it should minimize the effect.

Don't care for the BSA red dot on anything that I might shoot over 100 yd.  Works just great on my Ruger 10/22.

Bushnell Trophy red dot is better but don't like small diameter. 

Red dots don't gather light at dusk and dawn, limiting shooting time when hunting.

Play with the positioning of the red dot, I like mine in a medium position, not way forward like in a scout position nor all the way to the rear like a scope.  Shoot with both eyes open and focused on target.

Holographics (Bushnell Holo, EOTECh, JP Ent. J sight, Burris Fastfire) are more better for my money and don't demonstrate the parallax symptoms like red dots.

Best red dot is the Aim Points but would try the Tru Glow 2X once.  Like BBF said, don't go cheap.  Enough rambling, hope I've been some help.
