AR-15 vs AR-10 accuracy comparison
« on: January 04, 2010, 04:21:39 PM »
I know the AR-15 in .223 has excellent accuracy, but how does the AR-10 in a .243 compare in terms of accuracy and reliability?

If you wanted a 243 in the AR-10, what would you put together assuming your budget was $1500 or less, not including the scope. I already have a nice scope that I could use.

Shouldn't be any difference in accuracy.  It all depends on the quality of the parts.  For example, my Bushy Varminter (.223/5.56) shoots about the same as my DPMS AP4 (.308).

As far as building a .243 from scratch, you will be hard pressed to do it for under $1500.  There are not enough companies out there making parts for AR-10's and AR-10 variants.  My suggestion would be to order your gun the way you want or purchase one, replace the parts that you want to, and sell the factory parts you replace.  I think you could get that done under $1500.

Check out Lucas Tactical.  I ordered my AP4 through them.  I was happy with their service and they will build to suit your needs.

cant tell you about a 243 but i havent found an ar10 in 308 yet that wasnt capable of moa or better accuracy. Mine will routinely shoot 3/4 inch groups and its a 16 inch battle rifle not a heavy barreled target gun

What kind of gun do you have?  A DPMS AP4 308?

My R25 in 308 shoots 2-1/2 inch at 100 with open sights and blind me holding it! I will scope it soon to take to West Texas next month and it only cost 1399.00 new in the box.

gonna test it on some hogs and Axis and will report next month!

BTW, my interest is in a scoped flattop. I have a nice Burris Signature scope.

I don't think you'll have an accuracy problem in the 223 caliber, but I have no idea on the 243 upper.
My Bushy M4 has a chrome lined match barrel and chamber, and shoots far closer than I do. You get what you pay for most times on these actions.

My DPMS 308B shoots just as well as my AR-15's. Shooting 1 inch 5 shot groups. The difference is at longer ranges my .308 will for sure get the job done before .223's.
