Montana Brand Trap ?
« on: January 05, 2010, 06:35:23 AM »
Has anyone used Montana Brand Traps, specifically the longliner 1 1/2 double coil.  I have been out of trapping for several years and am getting back into it.  Are these traps decent quality or should I look at something else. Thanks in advance

The only thing ive heard on grapevine is the longliner is no better than the duke  one and half.  Now this is   just what ive heard from trappers that have used  the longliner.

they are a little stouter than the dulke 1.5s, but pretty close as RdFx says. I added 3 doz 1.5 longliners this past season, and I like them. You canot beat a duke 1.5 for water- coon, rats and mink- and I find the longliner to be the same.
the only 1.5s I don;t like, are sleepy creeks (hate the pan/dog setup) and the older victors. The older victors even with new springs, give me misses on slides, whereas the dukes seldom do. Over the years, all my victors are now mink/rat only traps- for a coon on a drowner, its going to be another brand.

Thanks for the info, Fishdaddy that is fine, I wish I could afford to go with all Minnesota Brand traps but I would probably get ran off from home if I spent that much on traps with the fur market what it is.  The better half is very understanding but everything has its limits.  Is there another alternative out there that I have overlooked or am unaware of. I looked at the Dukes but the Montanas are about the same price with a lot of the work already done.

Bogmaster, how do the #3s rate, I would suspect the quality is about the same across the entire line.  Thanks

the number #3s are a much better trap insofar as they have bubbled jaw tips, welded pan, rounded jaws, etc- as good of an "out of the box" coyote trap as the higher priced ones. For the record, its a terrible coon trap staked in the open-you will get lots of chewing.

if you want a top of the line 1.5, try the 1.5 specials- again, rounded jaws, etc. I have had some problems, with the rounded jaws and coon in the water on slides. but on land, you cannot find a much better 1.5
