More likely will be found by a diver this spring at the bottom of a lake, than at a dealer.  :'(
Imagine the look on a theif's face when they opened the back, expecting to find tools or a quad (something they could fence) and found that in there instead!  :o

If luck plays a part, they might just abandon it, knowing that it would be a red hot looked-for item!

All I know is what I posted.  Matt Switlik sent me the information.  I think that the thief might not of known what was in the trailer, but knew that at least the trailer was worth several thousand dollars.  If I hear anything else I will post it.  Thanks for passing the information on and keeping an eye out for it.  I can only imagine what Bill is going through.

Some additional information.  The gun is an iron reproduction with ornamental markings on it.  The WV "inspector markings"  stands for his name.  Thanks for helping to get the word out.

It is a bad, bad thing, I can imagine this man's sense of loss. BoomLover mentioned something about these bums perhaps just abandoning the gun and carriage; you never know, the people that do these things are usually strung out on drugs, or just plain dumb, so there's always the chance that this may be what happens, and the police will then recover it. I was thinking that if these thieves saw that first episode of "Pawn Stars" where the gent sold his Hotchkiss cannon for 30 grand, that they might try this route, and get nabbed when the shop owner notifies the cops; at least one can always hope.
RIP John. While on vacation July 4th 2013 in northern Wisconsin, he was ATVing with family and pulled ahead of everyone and took off at break-neck speed without a helmet. He lost control.....hit a tree....and the tree won.  He died instantly.

I had a repro 3" confederate field piece stolen from me in 1999

so I can relate..... all I can say is I hope the wheels fell off and

the barrel landed on the bum's legs.

Good News!  Just got this update.  Thanks for helping to put out the word.

Well Boys,
Were back in business. Got an anonymous phone call from a couple of"good Samaritans" in Detroit who was really scared of finding a stolen trailer in his neighborhood with a cannon in it after watching the news today. He offered to bring it to me anonymously and he did so around 5pm today. Ole number 5 is back home minus the winch and battery and with a broken side door handle Cursory look thru the inventory in the dark is that all the important stuff is there and I will do a daylight check tommorrow. Have to go back tonight with another padlock for the tongue. Good news is Good news and thanks for all the help the Batty mates put out. Got a call from a fellow cannoneer in Richmond Va this am and he notified the entire east coast about the theft. This afternoon got a call from a fellow in Dallas Tx and he notified the entire southwest of the US. Great Lakes region was notified. What an amazing network of fellow reenactors we have.  Description of No. 5 went cross country in a half day..
Thanks all,
Col. Bill

Maybe he ought to store it on jackstands with the wheels off.  It would at least require more activity on the parts of the thieves to get it underway.

Now that IS GREAT NEWS! These things don't usally turn out this way.

Did you ever get it back?

No and the local PD didn't seem that interested.....It was in a barn on my mom's estate behind locked gates and a locked door
I believe the real estate people had a hand in it they removed(stole) things from the house I was no longer in control of the estate the Fla. Courts
had put a lawyer in charge (another long story) and the real estate agents who were in charge of selling the house plundered quite a bit when no one
was looking, Cops not interested Real estate firm -big money..... enough said..... Other than I have little love for lawyers or real estate agents.

Maybe he ought to store it on jackstands with the wheels off.  It would at least require more activity on the parts of the thieves to get it underway.

I think a small hitch size steel ball and a good hardened lock in the tong would slow most thieves down, if they can't cut the lock they can't move it.

I'm glad this story turned out to have a happy ending.

Norm, or anyone else who would know; I've never thought about it before, and I'd assume the answer will be yes, but I don't know; do the members of N-SSA, and reenactors groups that you know of, usually carry insurance on their artillery pieces?

I don't know what other groups do.  I carry some insurance as the guns belong to me and my brother not to a group.

Ya know; I had never really of someone just rolling in and stealing a trailer. Perhaps I better get some extra as my toy lives in its trailer to.
