« on: January 06, 2010, 06:16:26 AM »
I have an H & R or Maybe its a NEF. But wondering who else makes a single shot maybe a little nicer one
but not with poly choke ...if thats what its called.  Or do I need to look on the used rack ?

Order yourself a Topper Deluxe Classic from H&R.

Most popular of the new ones seams to be the H&R/ Nef. I tend to like the older ones like the winchester 37.  ;D So yes I would check the used gun racks.

I don't care for the 37 Winchester.

A lot of people say that but the sheet metal "hammer" (actually a cocking indicator) and the semi-hammerless design are pretty unimpressive IMO.  I like the 37A better.

I agree with the topper as it can handle choke tubes and it can be tapped for a scope. The Pardner does neither.

Thats assuming a fellow wants screw in tubes & to mount a scope on his shotgun. Both seam out of place on a shotgun to me.  :)

Single shot shotguns huh? Well here a real single shot shotgun. No screw in chokes, no rifle sights, not scopes, just a good ole time single shot shotgun. Shows hand stamped patent dates of Oct 30 1894, June 16, 1903, and June 28th, 1904. Hand stamped serial on receiver behind the trigger guard, no model #, made by Remington Arms Co. Ilion, N.Y. USA
Notice the side cocking leaver instead of a hammer. 32" barrel, and full choke.

P.S. Carried by a lawman in Maryland in the early 1900s. Carried a lot, shot very little. My son worked with the lawman's son, and picked it up from the son for $20.00. The guy offered to take $20.00 bucks for a Colt SAA in 45LC his father also carried, but my son's conscience got the better of him, and told him what he had. Locks up tighter than a bank vault.

:D  Dee, you still shoot this gun???? I never got into single barrels, have enough ways to spend my $$$, but my shooting pal loves 'em... We only have blue grouse, sage grouse, and waterfowl here, and he only goes for blues...So the single is fine...I bought him a couple unusual ones years ago, when I first retired and he watched my house while I was away.. This one looks really neat...The one I lusted after most for my self was a 36 inch barrel Iver Johnson with the old color hardened action..It was in perfect cond. but the guy wouldn't sell.

Actually WCH, I have checked the shotgun out, and it would be safe to shoot low base for sure, but I am not into single shot anythings. It would however make an excellent squirrel gun, and it is light. I grew up with a single shot Stevens 22 rifle, and 12 gauge Topper back in the late 50s early 60s. My deal noe for the most part after carrying everything in L.E. is lever action rifles and pump shotguns. My grandpa shot a lever action 22, and a single barrel 12 till the day he died. He never seemed to need anything else, and he scored more than anyone on the hunt.
I restored the 870 Remington I carried for 20 years, and everyone here pretty much knows about my old Winchester 3030, and my Model 92 clone in 357 mag. The latter is what I carry the most now a days.
I may take the single barrel out this winter though and shoot a squirrel or two with it. I doubt it has ever killed anything unless the old lawman shot an outlaw.

The screw in tubes and scope would make it 50 yard deer gun for old guys with poorer eyes.
The choke tubes add versatility for choosing the best choke for your purpose. With a single shot you have to choose your best advantage to get a clean kill.
I was brought up with 12 ga single shot modified choke and for the ruffed grouse and I wish I had a more open bore for those 10-20 yard shots in heavy cover.
While I a full choke might be better for varmints and pheasants etc.
Just some thoughts and as you can see I love versatility in a gun especially with a low budget

With modern shells you can just use a different load and change the pattern some. I just don't care for the look of the bore up front with the screw in chokes. I have a benelli with them, but most of my guns are older guns and I like a more traditional look. I think my 97 hammer gun would look odd with screw in chokes & a scope.  ;D

Sachel, I would certinally half to agree with you about that.  ;D It's when I pick it up that the look offends me.

The shotguns I own that have tubes I seam to seldom change them anyway. Using mostly IC & IM all the time. Of course in a single barrel I switch them but not in the field.

To the OP:

Here is a single shot for $195 delivered to your FFL brand new.  These are imported from the Russian Baikal plant by Remingtons Spartan Gunworks division.  They are not importing anymore however and I believe these to be closeout prices.  Also available in 20 ga.

Baikal is still making them, apparently they are in a dispute with the current importer and will switching to a new one, or so the rumour is.
