.243 loads for Barnes X 95gr.?
« on: October 28, 2003, 04:47:17 PM »
What is a good powder for this combo? My wife has the same problem as the aforementioned post, and I would like to try the Barnes X. She is using a Browning BLR. Thanks. DM

My .243 is a Browning LW. It shoots most factory and reloads into groups of 0.4" to 0.8". So far I've never found a load using Barnes X bullets that would pass muster for hunting game. Bottom line is I have no clue. Wish ya luck. I sold every Barnes bullet I had and gave up on them. In the .243 I recommend Nolser PTs.

Well, I haven't bought any yet. From what I have been reading, they may be more trouble to me than I want. What other suggestions? It is for deer in KS, and my wife has had the same problem as the guy from MT. We see her get a good hit, the deer drops, then up and gone, and no blood trail. We have been using Winchester 100gr. blacktip whatevers. I can reload so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. DM

Dalton, I killed a couple decent Whitetail bucks with a little .243 Ruger 77 Ultralite two years ago. I used the 100 gr Speer Grandslams in their top shelf factory ammo( nickle cases). Both Bucks were hit in the lungs at 50-75 yds. Neither made more than 20-30 yds and dropped dead.

Give em a try

I believe Nosler makes both a 95 grain and 100 grain PT. That's the bullet I think might work best in the .243. I have some of their 85s and 95s loaded up now. I'll be shooting them soon and pick the best load and give it a try on deer this season. I'd like to have the 100s but since I had these on hand I'm gonna give them a try.
