Question/shipping to Alaska from lower 48?
« on: October 28, 2003, 05:29:46 PM »
A freind of mine has an antique rifle...family heirloom that needs to go to a relative in Alaska....somebody here told him it needs to go through all this FFL bunk....Cant he just put it in a box and send it regular UPS to Alaska?  I know it can't go UPS/Ground through Canada, but is it illegal to send it air?

I believe he will be stuck shipping from an FFL holder to an FFL holder.  Unlicensed individuals are not allowed to transfer firearms interstate.  This would include an "antique" which most likely is classified as a "curio or relic" by the BATF.  They have some FAQ's as well as the pertinent regs at their website.

Since you are transfering a weapon from one individual to another I believe that you have to use an FFL.  You could ship UPS from you, to you, and they might hold it for you for a long gun.  Handguns have to go FFL to FFL and the person will fill out the appropriate paperwork at the other end as I had to with my handguns.  I shipped them through a FFL/UPS to Alaska.

If in Alaska, I can mail my long guns to myself from any PO, to be picked up by myself for up to 30 days.

You could also carry the firearm in a hardcase, in your bagggage through an airline.  Even handguns, brought 2 back in March on Continental.

FFL sounds like a hastle but sometimes you have to jump through hoops to be legal.  Unless you want a girl friend named Bubba.

More info:  All firearms shipments go 2nd day air guarrenteed delivery to avoid travel through Canada.  Alaskan Pilots have a problem because up here they are reuqired to carry a survivial firearm.  So they have to violate Alaska regs. to comply with flying across Canada or landing there.
