Question about Johnny Stewart Call

Hello, everyone.

I've decided to try my hand at coyote hunting since they are plentiful here in the Green Mountains of Vermont. I recently purchased a Johnny Stewart PC-7 Rabbit Distress Predator Call , having been told that closed-reed-distress calls are some of the easier calls to learn on. Here's my question, though. What is the little plastic rod that came with it for? The package does not contain instructions, and I can't find information about it on the website. It fits in the mouthpiece where the reed is located. Is it for adjusting the reed? Is it for removing frozen saliva in cold weather? Any insight into the matter would be greatly appreciated. I would also appreciate any links to sites where I can learn more about calling. There is a lot of great information on this site, but I would like to read as much as I can.

Did they give you any extra reeds with the call? I believe that this is what the rod is for (changing em out) as I have a Knight & Hale call that is similar.

I apologize for the slow reply.

I don't know if it has an adjustable reed. No instructions came with it, and I can't find a good write up on it at the company website. Is there a way to tell by looking? I'm new to calling.

The "rod" that comes with any enclosed reed call is for installing or removing the reed.   One end of it will be a half of a rod profile so that you can slide the flat portion over the reed and put the pressure on the reed body base instead of on the fragile reed itself.

Probably explained as clear as mud, but that is what the rod is for.

Like someone else said the rod is for changing the reed.  Johnny Stewart does not tell you that.  You can get replacement reeds by ordering them from Johnny Stewart or at most Sporting Goods stores.  Reeds get damaged by something getting shoved down the mouth piece by accident.  Or ice.
