45 DISC ELite @ the Dinger Farm
« on: January 07, 2010, 12:04:20 PM »
Got to the farm again this morning... When I left the house is was sunny and right at 20 degrees - with very little wind.  So I had great plans of setting up the chronograph - getting some velocities and complete sighting in the rifle... Oh! and shoot some of my newly acquired 41 cal 210 Gold Dots in Harvester Crush Ribs....

Got to the farm - it was still sunny - that is a good thing! - it felt much colder and as I expected the wind was blowing right up the draw...

Set the target at 50 yards moved all my stuff to my tailgate shooting table, setup the shooting bench and got ready to setup the chrono but it was really cold so I passed on the chrono there will be better days for that.

My first three shots were with the Hornady 40/200 grain XTP's but I used the Crush Rib sabot which is a little loose in my bore.  I think you can see the results of the loose sabots (group #1).

Group #2 was with the Speer 41 cal 210 grain Gold Dots in Crush Ribs...  They did not load the way I hoped they would.  They were very tight at the crown and did seem to disort the tips of the petals as they disappered down the bore.  In this gun with it's tight bore - I may be asking to much of the very thin CR sabots in a tight bore, however I am really anxious to try them in a 50 now as the sabots are much thicker and will have more polymere (thicker) to flex and fit the bore.  From the target I can not complain to much about accuracy...

Group #3 - shot after a scope adjustment and I need to take all the credit for #5.. I knew before I pulled the trigger it did not feel right - but I shot anyway and see I was right - DANG!

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - they are a blast....

sabotloader, were you using the same sabot with the 40 and 41 bullets?  Good shooting.  Also, Are you using the fpj's?

Yes - to both questions....

But. like I said in the write up THIS Elite's bore is right at being to tight for the 41 cal bullet in the Harvester CR sabot - I am sure I distorted the sabot petals really bad.  But then when I tried them in my DISC Extreme they loaded very well without any distortion to speak of.  Kinda wish I had taken the Extreme instead of the Elite.  I have a 45 Rem 700ml that I am going to try next...

Sabot loader I wanted to try the the .410 210 gold dots in my Omega X7 with the 50/40 sabots.  but they were just too tight. I was thinking you could push those alot harder than the .40 180 grain gold dots, The 180s shot fine but man they got a real deep hollow point & I was worried about them opening up to much. the .410s 210grainers would make for a good deer bullet if you got a gun you can loadem in. Thanks for the report.  Jay

Were you trying the Harvester Crush Rib?

What sabot do you normally use in your X7?

I know the new Omegas ans the X7 have a tight bore... I think they are all trying to get right at the .500 area now.  Since there is no official standard the bores can very... but it appears all the major manufactures are trying to stay in the .500 area.

If you normally use the tan MMP - there is a possibility that the crush rib with the .41 might work, if it does it is a great bullet.

I had a 45 cal Knight Extreme here that loaded the .41 with the CR sabot very well - yet when I go to my 45 Knight Elite... it is just that much tighter - it shoots them well but it is somewhat tough to load them through the crown.. once you get by the crown they load great.

I have some 50/40 Cush ribs coming and when they get here I will no more about loading in a 50.  If nothing else I know (i think) I can load them in my White...
