I love short barrels as much as anybody but to me balance is just as important. My 1917 Enfield 375 H&H has a 25" heavy sporter weight barrel and has perfect balance. And it will put 10 rounds into an inch at 100yds. off the bench as long as I allow the barrel to cool. I just think it is interesting that we have no problem using shotguns(repeaters too) with 24" and longer barrels. Or that muzzle loading rifles commonly are equipped with rather long barrels.

The point of ENJOYING a big bore is to handload for different classes of game or shooting.

I used to deer hunt with a peep sighted Ruger Tropical 375.  Loaded with 235 Speers at about 358 Winchester power were real nice rounds to 250 yards, much younger eyes.  The only reason to load real stout loads is to reach a long way for big game in North America.  In fact I tink the 375 is often not noticed for its devestating long range abilities.  I would choose one over any 338.  A 270 gr boattail at a BC of over .400 is formidable indeed.

As far as short guns are concerned wounded animals will choose some heavy cover to hole up in.  Thats were a short gun shines.  I would sacrifice a 100 fps in such situations because one is dealing with almost muzzle velocity at these ranges.

My 375 H&H Magnum with a 13 inch barrel including the brake and, guess what, I load with RL-15 and don't find unburned powder in the barrel.

I don't appear to have a problem with bullet stabilization either.

Theoretically a slightly shorter cartridge like the 375 Ruger would give a longer effective barrel length but I abandoned that idea quickly
after I checked price and availability of 375 Ruger brass.
hi
how many fps do you get from 13 inch barrel?
