Potassium Nitrate for slow match
« on: January 08, 2010, 03:18:04 PM »
I know this company has come up before on the board, but for some reason it never made it to the link list.  It's there now.

Here is their information on postassium nitrate for making slow match.

Bit expensive, especially  with shipping, but if you need it...

You could also get some cannon ball paint. Cannon ball paint

Those of you in farming areas can probably get bulk (50 or 100 lb bags)  KNO3 from farm supply places for much lower per pound prices than that.  Check with fertilizer suppliers.

This site is geared toward firework enthusiast.  They have KNO3 and just about anything else you may be interested in.  I have ordered from them a number of times and have always been very happy with the service:

Not any more, I checked. Checked Drug store and they can get it but sky high prices and I mean high.

And of course the stump remover formula has been changed and you won't find it there in hardware store.  You might find it in an old hardware store that still has old stock.

I'll add Skylighter to the list.

If you're just using it for slowmatch, a little potassium nitrate goes a long way.

Back in '05 I ordered five pounds of KNO3 from an aquarium supply.

I still have more match than I'll need for the next year or so, and I've probably given away as much as I've kept for myself...

..and I'm almost finished with the first pound. The other four are still sealed.

When I was using quills and a linstock, I had more problems finding the proper cotton rope to make the match with.

In the past I bought the cotton cloths line cut in short lengths and stripped out the filler that won't burn worked fine.

If the stump remover you are getting at you Home Depot has potassium nitrate in it, hoard it....stump removers are no longer made with potassium nitrate.  Check the lable or MSDS.

There is also a link on the Cannon link list for a source for cotton rope.  Suppose you could use hemp rope also...bit spendy.

I just bought (today in fact) a 50# bag of KNO3 fertilizer at a Pottery supply place. They use KNO3 with other things to make colors for glazing pottery items.

My local bulk fertilizer place (which I frequent often to buy fertilizer by the ton) does not carry KNO3. If it did it would probably be in the 30 dollar a bag range would be my guess for this time of the year. Fertilizer prices have been all over the place in the last 3 years though, so I am only guessing.

The pottery place charged $50 for a 50# bag, which might be a little high if I could get it elsewhere, but damn cheap compared to grants stump remover at about 6 bucks a pound. Of course, you can make a lot of slow match with one pound of KNO3.

I do know a small, low key pyro supply dude who carries KNO3 for $18 for a 15# bag, plus shipping. I have only bought from him once, and there didn't seem to be any hazardous shipping fees associated with a KNO3 purchase, so it was regular UPS rates. He is in "New England", so if you are in the northeast shipping would be cheaper than if you are in California.

He seems to have a well respected reputation as being a fast, honest shipper and his price list has prices for stuff that are probably cheaper than just about anyone else I have seen.

So, if you can't find KNO3 locally, PM me and I'll give you contact info. He doesn't exactly hide or anything, but he posts on pyro sites that are sort of restricted to weed out the 15 year old M-80 makers and such. Because of that I won't post his email address here.

Try round cotton lantern wick. I use it. it works really well. NO plastic cores to worry about.
Best place to get long lengths cheap is here:

The 7/16 " stuff fits thru 1/2 " copper pipe and fittings nicely
