my new to me contender..
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:20:32 AM »
I recently traded for this at a local shop. serial number puts it at a 1979 production date, Previous owner added easy open conversion, super 14 in 7-30 waters, bushnell 2-6x32 scope in a duo mount. Just got back from the range with it colder than cold today so I only shot a few rounds. Shoots awesome recoil was way less than expected, close to a 44mag revolver in recoil. Sorry for the dark pic, just a quicky taken at the range this morning.

thanks. I had a contender a couple years ago in 223. I ended up selling it. I got away for guns for awhile and started back out with a H&R rifle in 223. All it did was make me miss my contender so I swapped it off for this one. I am already wanting another 223 barrel and maybe 22lr. ;D

Excellent !! Glad your liking your Contender.
I was considering the 7-30 till a 223 fell into my lap,so to speak.
Glad to hear the recoil was manageable and using the 44 mag as comparison was really helpful.

Roy,
You will enjoy the 7x30, I have one with a 12" and a brake, mine is very accurate.  As you said recoil is very managable, I've mounted a Harris bi-pod and is more stable, try some Speer 125gr HP's and H4895.  Nice lookin outfit, keep on shooting the TC.

Welcome back to the TC's. The 7-30Waters is a good deer round in the Tender. My first pistol kill deer was with the Waters. Should have kept the barrel but I didn't. Yes, everyone needs a 22LR barrel. If you really want a fun barrel check out the 17MACH2, talk about accurate!!!

My first T/C was (still have it) a super 16 in 7x30W. I quickly sent it out to Mag-Na-Port and loved what they did. Shoots sweet, no vertical muzzle lift at all. Brass is real easily made from .30-30. Favorite powder is 748. Favorite varmint projectile is the Hornady 100 grain HP. Favorite deer projectile is the 140 Ballistic Tip. 100 Hornady will put 10 in the kill zone on a paper ground hog target at 200 yards. Took lots of Pdogs with it. Took two nice deer with the 140s. Those will do sub minute at 100 yards. It wears a 3x9 Burris. Enjoy yours!
