No serial number on Belgium Browning Auto 22
« on: January 09, 2010, 06:36:04 AM »
I have only had two other Auto 22s in my possession in the past, one Belgium and one Japanese and both had a serial number on lower right rear of receiver. The Belgium made Auto 22 Grade II that I have now does not have a serial number. Does anyone here know how to explain this? Thank you.

Look carefully on the left side of the barrel.  That is where my serial number is located.  You may need a magnifying glass to read it as my number is very faint.

Good Luck,

Silver Bear,

Thank you, but no luck. I looked under magnification in good light-no serial number. On the left side of the barrel is 22 long rifle, on the right side is Browning patents, on top Browning Arms Company St. Louis, MO & Montreal, P.Q.  I even removed the forearm and looked.

Your receiver might originally had the rifle's SN on the barrel, but then had the barrel replaced with a later Belgian barrel from the period after the SN was moved to the receivers - leaving yours an orphan.

I finally found someone who knows where to look. The serial number on this 1968 Belgium Browning Auto 22 is on the bottom of the barrel just forward of the forearm and the stamping is of thin letters and numbers which is hard to see.

I know some of you are going to scream.
Hit the serial numbers with liquid paper.
then run your finger over the number to wipe away excess.
Now the serial number is in white.
I walked into a gun shop in CA and all if his guns had white serial numbers.  I asked him why?  He said cause I'm old, it don't hurt the guns and everyone can see them.  I bought a few guns from him.  The liquid paper does not hurt the gun, comes off easily, it really does make it easier when recording serial numbers for insurance or loging them into record books.

A lot of firearms, especially rimfires made prior to the 1968 GCA don't have serial numbers.  Never seen anything that says these manufactures did and those didn't but have had or seen Marlins and others with out serial numbers.
