« on: January 09, 2010, 09:12:44 AM »
Been thinking about this forum. Not a lot of activity but there are a few faithfull. I think the real question is are you a "biker that hunts or a hunter that rides" There is a vast difference. The forum dosen't seam real friendly to hunters that ride.  ::)

Hummmm, a real interesting question...  :-\  Got me thinkin... I don't know as I could catagorize myself as one over the other.  Kinda the same topic as "Are you a shooter who hunts or a hunter who shoots?"

I guess I'll hunt till I can't make my way around the woods anymore.  And I'll ride till my nerve gives out and I can't "ride it like I stole it" as D&H would say...    :D

So, since bike and gun related activities are my only hobbies, I can't really answer that question.  Sorry.   :-[

The forum dosen't seam real friendly to hunters that ride.  ::)

I don't know as that is really the case.   :-\  You ain't baseing that opinion on threads that start discussing MC's are you?   ;)

How so? ....... Never heard it put that way..... and never gave it much thought.  We ride and shoot and work on guns and work on bikes and hunt and fish and ride some more, and shoot some more, and etc., etc. ......  And just as long we still can, and it's all still fun...... Well,  I still aint sure just what we are.

I don't know which I am. I don't ride as often as I used to but I hunt more now than when I was younger.

Once upon a time all I had was my motorcycle and if it wasn't snowing, I was riding.

Nowadays I prefer to be a little more comfortable. I hit the ripe old age of 45 next Wednesday. ;)

I don't see this forum being unfriendly to anyone, regardless. In fact respect for other riders was a prerequisite of even having this forum and I think everyone has been very respectful of one another.

Some silly questions may have been asked but you'll have that wherever people are free to ask what they please.

Ok, I will throw down an answer. I am a hunter that rides, as I was hunting when I was 8 and just bought my first bike this last April. I am 25 and some change. So by the stated question that would make me a hunter that rides. Now, I'm not really sure that my answer is correct though. In the last 8 and a half months I have put about 7500 miles on my sportster. I know people who I would call bikers not put that many miles on there bike in two or three years. So maybe that makes me a biker that hunts. I guess that for most of us on this forum we could be either of them depending on the time of the year. Right now I will be a hunter that rides, and starting about mid April I will be a biker that hunts and so on for the forseeable future.

I have made it to 39 and the only "tag" I have put on myself is "AMERICAN". I shoot, hunt, fish, camp, ride, but have never felt the need to label myself.

Not trying to start a arguement, the question was not ment to be critical. I just got to thinking about myself today in the tearms of the forum tital.

I bought my first bike when I was 20. I'm 64 right now, so I've been riding for 44 years but I've loved guns and everything outdoors since I was a kid. I would spend my allowance on outdoor magazines and BBs. Flunked a few classes in school because I read hunting and travel books instead of the textbooks. If push came to shove what would come out on top? Don't think I've decided yet concerning myself, and maybe it don't matter because I'll continue to do both as long as I can. But the question lingers for me, am I a Biker that hunts, or a hunter that rides? Where are my core values?

And Richard, I guess my comment on not being as friendly to hunters that ride was based on how long they seam to stick around. I think they gravitate to more gun or hunting related forums. To me it just shows where their main interest lies, not anything wrong with the forum.

Your thoughts were helpful, Regards,

It's a hard chose, to hunt or to ride, but I can tell you that I would sell the Sporty and quit riding before I would quit hunting. Hunting is the way I feed my family and some of my friends. I haven't quite figured out how to feed the wife and lil girl by riding yet, so there is my answer.

Okay, here you have it!   :o   It's all in how the question is framed!  I should have known that, both as an attorney and because back in the day I was an Army flight instructor and taught I don't know how many fledgeling pilots how to fly.  I found that each student was different and you often had to vary your instructional technique to get some point across to them.  Once something was put to them in a manner they could understand, it was like the lights coming on.

Such is the case here.  Asked in that manner, the answer comes more easily.

If I had to make such a choice, I would pick hunting.  If it came down between hunting and shooting, I would pick shooting.  I wouldn't like it, a major part of my life would be gone in either event.  But, I guess that makes me a hunter who rides, and a shooter who hunts.  Not what I would have figgured...  :-[

I would def pick hunting over riding.  I love both but if I were to the point that I could not hunt, I doubt I would be in any shape to ride.

Lets see, I hunted coyotes lastnight. I worked on my bike and 4 wheeler this morning and shot clay pigeons this afternoon.

But as Jumpsteady stated "I haven't quite figured out how to feed the wife and lil girl by riding yet"

I guess I would have to choose hunting over riding. Just dont sound right to say it though :-\

I ride as a means of transportation....it isn't a hobby.

Hunting/shooting is my primary hobby.

I would seam that when we really take a hard look at our core values we may not always be what we think we are. Thank God we don't need to choose only one. And Swampman I don't view hunting or shooting either as a hobby. To me it's life and breath.

Riding I love, boating is a hobby. But hunting & shooting is necessary to life and mental health, I have spent my life positioning myself to be able to do these things because I must have them. They are not what I do, shooting & hunting is what I am.  ;D And it sounds like most of you are the same as I am.

I love to ride my bike.  I love to hunt and shoot.  I do each as much as I can between making a living.  I was able to make a trip from North Alabama to West Yellowstone Montana and back this year.  If that makes me a biker in someone's eye so be it.  If not, so be it.  I really don't care and will not live my life to make anyone label me either way.  I live my life the way I want and anyone that has anything negitive about that can KISS MY %@#....Does that make me a biker???  Hunter?

I hunt and I ride, I ride and I hunt.  Don't know what you mean Pastor that the forum is not friendly toward hunters that ride either.
Deer hunting is mostly fun then you shoot one and it turns to work.

If you had to choose between riding or hunting for the rest of your life, which one would you pick?

Hunting for sure but it would be a sad day for the bike. When I get on that Vulcan I only have to choose the general direction and the bike does the rest. A lot of times it may head for a neighbooring state where I cruise the strip, get a bite to eat, then return home. Once upon an Osh-Kosh run I returned through Milwakee and was bearing down on Chicago...that Vulcan blew into town, cruised Michigan ave, circled around to Navy pierre where I had lunch then blew out of town hard on I55 with more than enough power to leave myself an out in that crazy traffic. I did not have to go too far to get back on the solitude of those two lane highways as I headed cross country to Kankakee.

I have been seeing a lot of newer looking bikes for sale in any givin small town on my travels...I guess that they decided that they were not having fun out there?...in my own small burg we see big twins going round & round with really no place to go. I think that some people like to ride motorcycles while others like to be seen riding them. It is kind of like the jet-ski's at the beach where most will run back n forth just outside the bouy line.

Mine is the 800 classic. It has four valves per cylinder which gives it a lot of low end torque (even with a passenger) but can also make rpm quickly to move on out if needed. I like to counter steer it because it can handle like an F-16  ;D got to watch that side stand though and it does have a few scrape marks on the bottom. On the right side my boot heel has just caressed the pavement a time or two. The bike is held in place by a pair of Metzeler 880 tires that were made in Germany and they were a tremendous difference over the stock bridgestones. I ride it hard and fast By No Means but enjoy the smooth & easy manuvering that it allows.

I like the twisting, winding two lanes and will cruise at 59 to 60 mph for the most part.
