Rice or DeHaas barrel ?
« on: January 09, 2010, 05:27:54 PM »
I am getting a TVM EV rifle made soon and am down to 2 different barrels. Out of the DeHass and Rice, which would you guys choose and why? Square cut rifling or Radius(round)?

Jack, either one of theses barrels are premium barrels so that would be up to you. I would go with the round groove rifling as they seem to shoot cleaner and clean easier (This is just MY opinion).

Jack,
I have flinter with a Rice Barrell and a percussion with a Rice barrell.  Both are round groove, great shooters and easy to clean.  I haven't used DeHaass barrels so can't speak to them.

Thanks guys, I am leaning towards Rice as they are very proven and also getting round bottom rifling. It will be a .54 and 42" barrel. I am getting a straight barrel and will probably get a 15/16" barrel although I would love a 1", but it may be too nose heavy. I like heavy guns, but not crazy nose heavy guns.

A straight barrel 1"x42" would indeed be muzzle heavy. The first rifle I ever built used that barrel size and I ended up cutting it down to 36" to make it more manageable.

Either barrel is premium, no worries about that. We have come to favor radius groove rifling because it just seems to clean up slick & quick, but for accuracy you wont go wrong with either.
BTW, we also favor 'swamped' barrels (just like the old timers) because the length can be there with fantastic balance.

The finest shooting muzzleloader I've ever owned was built by Jack Hubbard and it had a Rice barrel.  You couldn't miss with it.
