IMHO, this is the case. What better way would HE have of humiliating a prideful man that believes himself as a messiah. Few recall that G*D does have a sense of humor. Here is the verses that prove this:

1Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?
2The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,
3Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.
4He that sitteth in the heavens shall laugh: the LORD shall have them in derision.
So, it would not be out of character for G*D to do this to show that HE is truly in charge.
