Anybody hunt in waders when the weather gets cold?

It occurs to me that waders, the kind used for duck hunting, 3-6 mm neoprene, might be a cold weather fighter while sitting on stand or oozing through the woods on these wintey days.

Lots of guys hunt in hip boots in alaska. Not really for warmth but to keep our feet dry. In southeast knee high rubber boots are the most common for getting in & out of our skiffs while hunting. Extra Tuffs are the alaska sneakers.

I'd think waders would be heavy? I wear packs and insulated bibs.

Well I'll say one thing they are hotter than heck. But I'll bet that as soon as you stop you'll freeze to death. If it were the hot ticket, no pun intended, there would be some TV hunter pimping the new neoprene long johns that got him his "Booner" last season. They just don't breath and are to thin to do it on plain insulating power alone.

Several years ago I shot a spring tom in my waders... It was wet and rainy and I had to cross a creek to get where I wanted to go...  Not a bad way to hunt but there's some serious scent control issues when you try it with deer hunting.

I used to coon hunt in them mainly for the creeks, but don't remember them being warmer than any other boot.

I assumed he was talking about chest waders... if he's talking about hip waders, you're right... they are not any warmer than anything else... and they are less comfortable.

+1.....I've done quite a bit of hunting with neoprene waders cause much of where I deer hunt is under water. Because they do not breath, all your perspiration stays in whatever clothes you have underneath. As long as you keep moving you're fine, but as soon as you stop you will begin to chill. I only use them any more for short jaunts in really cold weather when the ice isn't thick enough to hold me. If I'm gonna be moving all day, I just wear regular boots/clothes and keep walkin' wet, cause there ain't much difference.

my main thought is simmilar to the other guys that if there is not a lot of water or snow involved  my duck boots and insalated bib overalls will do the trick. Rubber bottoms with breathable cloth on to plush have an insalated stockings inside. and even with a large amount of movement you end up with sweaty  cold feet.

Best investment I ever made for deep snow or rain was a pair of Sorel hunting boots. rated for -40 below. Feet are always dry and never ever cold. Aside from that they are very quiet and very comfortable.  

In warmer weather I have a lightweight pair of wolverines with Gore-Tex lining, also very quiet and very comfortable.  Feet stay warm and dry all day.

i do wear  high rubber  boots often  that  i wear  when  pouring concrete
more for water  more  than cold

i  had thought  about  wearing  my wet suit  on cold rainy days
