30-378 Weatherby

Whats your opinions on this chambering (30-378 Weatherby) both as a long range target and hunting round?  Thanks, Mike

19, the largest 30 cal. I used was Rem. Ultra mag...I have since sold both, and gone back to the std. Win. or Wea....A friend in town has one, and from the speed he says he is getting, I can see no benefit from the large case...The throat erosion will be great...and the gain in speed not that much unless a super long barrel were used...Again, I have NOT fooled with this caliber and really do not intend to...But from what I have been told an seen with the Ultra, the powder burned is not worth the speed gained.....

Nothing wrong with a fast .30.  I'm in the process of building a .300 WM (not even same class).  I kicked around doing a .300 RUM, but decided that the standard WM will do everything I ever need it to.  Plus, it is cheaper to shoot.

A lot of the guys who are getting into long range hunting and shooting are stepping up to the .338's.  You have all the power you will ever need, and it will buck the wind great.

Take a look at the ballistics of some of the .338's and compare them to the .30-378.  The .338's that come to mind are the .338 Lapua, .338 Lapua AI, .338 Edge (.300 RUM necked up), .338 RUM, and .338-378.  There are a few more out there, but I can't think of them right now.  My choice would be the .338 Lapua Mag AI.  I believe it is the fastest out of the above.  Yes, brass is extremely expensive, but it is Lapua brass and you can get a lot of reloads out of each one.

Just thought I would throw another option out there.

I know a bunch of old men that have a good comfortable hunting blind.  It is located up on the side of a mountain.  These guys shoot Moose down in the valley at ranges from 400 to 1200 yards.  They use 30/378 Weatherbys exclusively.  They swear by this cartridge.

Its a good long range caliber. My boss killed a deer at 600 yards last fall. But he's deaf from the muzzle brake he put on because the recoil was killing him.  :D

My Weatherby came from the factory with a brake.  Also a warning to use hearing protection due to increased noise.

 :) Today at coffee my pal was talking about his custom barreled 30-378...He was told to drop his loads from the present one, which was the lightest in the book, or throw away his brass after three rounds ......Has anyone else ran into this problem?????? Since it is a custom barrel job on a Number one, I was thinking the barrel work may not have been perfect...The guy who gave this information was a gunsmith from another area...he didn't do the work on the number one...I have not had trouble with other magnums and case seperation which he also said tended to be a problem.....Since Sourdough has the 338/378, and friends have the 30-378, maybe they could shed some light on this problem....

I have three boxes of brass, but have done all my workups with one box.  I have reloaded these seven times now.  I've had to trim them three times now.  I check each cartridge for signs of weakness before each reload.  First sign of weakness and that box will go away, but till I see that I will continue to reload that box.  I will let everyone know when I toss that first box.  I am now loading 98grs of IMR 7828 with 250gr Nosler Partitions.  I did not like the results I got from Rotumbo, so I went to the IMR powder.

 :DSourdough, thanks,, I was hoping to get an answer from you...I will pass the information on to my pal....do you happen to know what powder your pals use in their 30-378's...John has been using 50BMG...I felt he might get lower presssures with another powder, but I have never used either round...thanks for the help....
