Are you going to be loading for a smooth bore or rifled bbl?  If rifled there is a thread on down the page that discusses a source for sabot's for the Hornady SST bullets.  Here is the link:

http://www.gboreloaded.com/forums/index.php/topic,154919.0.html

The reason I am asking about the brass hulls is that Midway has them for about every gauge of shotgun as manufactured by Magtech.  I thought they might be a nice durable case for developing loads and hunting.

Rifled barrel, but I'm interested in casting my own slugs.  Lee has a very cool 12 gauge mold, but doesn't list a 20ga in their catalog.  I'm wanting to throw some heavy lead slugs downrange with as much accuracy as I can muster.
This will be my entry into the world of reloading, so I'm learning everything from scratch.

Pay the dough for the Lyman mold and 5th edition shotshell reloading handbook, and you have all the information you will need.

Silvertp, would like to do the same,I have a box of Magtech 20ga. I cut a Remington slug round apart, just to see how it was loaded. The slug was .598 dia. and the inside of the brass case is .650. So this does not look like it would work too well.
Did you ever load the brass cases and if you did what did you load them with. Thanks for any information you can give me.   Tom Ham7777

Howdy Ham7777

I haven't loaded any slugs at this point.  I was hoping to find out if the brass cases can be roll-crimped or if that would be working the brass too much.  I still don't have an answer to that question.

I was planning on chasing the bullet / sabot question after I decided on brass or plastic.

Sorry I can't help you as I haven't chased this since my post kinda died.

BPI has a ton of information on loading slugs they also sell all the componets needed. You can not roll crimp the brass you have to use and overslug card and glue it in. There are a couple of differant types of brass one is extruded (Magtech) and the other is machined (Rocky MNT cartridge co). Magtech has a larger inside dia.case and you will have to use oversized cards and wads. BPI (Ballistic Products Inc.)has a manual that will head you in the right direction. Kurt

Kurt...

Thanks for the information and references.  I checked out the BPI web site and their slug loading manual looks like a must have.  Also read the Rocky Mtn Cart. Co. info on reloading brass shot-shells.  Starting to make a lot more sense now.

Much appreciated!

From messing about with Magtech 24ga. (for a .577 Snider) I can tell you they are hard, and if you envision any bit of a roll crimp to even 'just' hold a card in you should anneal the mouths twice before starting to do so and probably every time reloaded, or every other time, to avoid splits.

GOTO the 615 HELLBOY EXPRESS thread on Accurate Arms...some folks are playing with 3.5" RMC cases, 20 ga slugs and making wannabee 600 NE's out of NEF 20 ga USH rifled barrels.  RMC also has 3" brass cases.  They're a bit more pricey than Magtech but MUCH higher quality.

Gcrank...Thanks for the good information on the Magtech brass, I always prefer learning from others.  What are you doing with the Snider?

NFG...Ive shot deer with the .375 H&H mag and with a .458 Win Mag but never with a 600 Nitro.  Im gonna have to check out the thread you mentioned, not that I "need" 3 1/2 20 gauge loads but I do enjoy messing with different firearms almost as much as I enjoy hunting.

My Snider is a MkIII cavalry carbine, British not Nepalese, and 'broadarrow' marked. The thumb sized cartridges are impressive, though small in this thread. I shoot .590ish round balls with great effect on my steel clangers at 50yd. I have no doubt that a whitetail deer would not last long with a decent hit. Yes, it would be deadly farther out, but with my eyes and the mil-sights, well, a man's got to know his limitations.
It is great fun, and appeals to me more than a 'trapdoor' Springfield in 45-70.

Think a 20ga/600NE wannabee is big...check out the 12GaFH thread on the same forum...it uses a 3.85", full length blown out 50BMG case...12 ga is 73 caliber...tossing 1000-1500 gr slugs around...then there is the 8 ga, some 4 ga and at least one 2 ga...I have an NEF 12ga USH I had rechambered to the 12GaFH...waving around one of those loaded rounds gives a new meaning to the phrase OH, MY GOD.... ;D :o ::)  LOL
