I've been giving serious thought to getting back into the muzzle loading. I have a mowrey .50 and a cva .45 mountain rifle. Both have pretty sad bores. The mowrey will still shoot fair with patched round ball but the cva barrel is a lost cause. So, do I look at replacing the barrel on the cva or start with a nice new 45 cal front stuffer that I can possibly get a extra .32 cal barrel for? All opinions welcome.

Depends on how much you can afford.  The CVA barrel will morethan likely be used unless you want to sink more money in a "built" barrel than probably what the rifle is worth.

I have a T/C Renegade with a .50 and a .45 barrel and love them both, but I think I'll have to start taking steroids if I wanted a smaller caliber.  I doubt the Hawken with a 15/16" barrel will gain you much going to a .32, but they are probably the easiest to find as a "drop-in" barrel.

I wanted a small-bore as well and just picked up a T/C Seneca in .36.

They are hard to find and expensive, but they're perfect if you only want a .45 and a .32.  They were only offered in these three calibers (.32, .36, .45) but are light and easy to handle.  Just expect to have over $500 in aused rifle with spare barrel.  The Cherokee by T/C is another option, but just as hard to find available.

barrels for that mountain rifle arent expensive at all. the mountain rifles are excellent rifles too, hold on to it! they have been gaining value over the past 2 years.

I second making the call to Deer Creek.  They bought the rifling machine from Douglas Barrels when that company dropped out of the black powder scene.  There was a fellow here who put one of Deer Creek's rifles together, and he felt the barrel was better than Green Mountain puts out.

I believe someone on here told me Deer Creek bought the mowrey stock as well? Anyone know for sure? Maybe replace the barrel on it as well. Then I'll have to break down and fix the lock on the cva flinch lock too. Thing scared the .... out of me the day it went off before I touched the trigger! Eared back the hammer started up to my shoulder and click fssst boom!

I'd spend my money on the Moutain Rifle, only get the .54 barrel and never look back.

You could get someone to "freshen" the barrel out to a .54 cal. I don't know who but know its done.

The mowrey as I said will still shoot ok but like my dad says, Its like toten around a buggy axle! Don't know about boring to smoothbore but it is a thought. I'll try calling deer creek tommorow if work is slow enough. Been real busy lately with this extreme cold down here. I know its been covered here somewhere here but is there any advantage to using blackpowder over the substitutes other than tradition?

It sounds like you have the set trigger adjustment too far in.  That's the screw in the trigger plate.  Back it out and see if it won't engage the seer more solidly, preventing the gun going off when you haven't pulled the trigger.  You should be able to cock the piece, set the trigger and then solidly thump the butt on the floor without the hammer dropping.
