Deer hunting cat

Some of you may remember my deer hunting cat - Socks, from last year. Well this past Saturday, in 17 degree weather, I was in the stand with Socks in my lap. He was looking around when the tail came up & he was looking straight ahead. At first I didn't see anything, then I saw movement. A 4pt sneaking through a yaupon ticket. BANG goes the 444 & 2nd deer for Socks. Just thought ya'll might get a giggle from this.

 Mabye I shoulda took my old tom hunting. I ended up with 2 tags to eat.

Several years ago my brother-in-laws kitten followed me into the woods and sat on me the most of the day.  My biggest worry was that if I shot, the cat would freak out and shred me in the process.  Overall it was a nice companion and helped keep me warm that day.

So....  Curiosity question about Socks...  ;)

How does he react to the gun shot??   Did you bring him
up on 22's and progress to larger calibers or what??

Great story!!  Wonder if he'd like to try elk hunting??

I had a black and white tom for years that would do the same thing sitting in the window watching deer on the lawn........I didn't have enough brains to take him hunting.  I had shot around him all his life, so he wasn't gun shy.  Now I'm wishing I had old Barney back.

Went hunting this year with some older guys. One of them, 78 years calls on the cell, "I see a coyote, should I take him?", answered no as we want them killing other stuff. Finally walked over to his stand. It was a cat. Oey vey.

Why not check out this membership's website and see if anybody amongst us has got a deer-hunting female cat that hasn't been neutered, and start up a deer-cat breed? Or is ol' Socks neutered?  From today's responses, you'd probably get a few takers.  I think 50 bucks a kitten is too cheap for what such a remarkable pet would be, 45-70.  Don't forget, in his spare time at home, he'd naturally be doing double duty keeping your house mouse-free, just to stay in practice. Obviously Socks thinks that deer are nothing more than big mice that have to be killed--and it appears that it's what he does best!

As my on line name might suggest for a number of years (until the great November purge of last year) I worked as a park ranger.  Part of my job required that I live in state housing on site to keep 'undesirables' out of the park at night.  After a while a large scruffy looking yellow tom cat appeared one day at my house.  Because of his disheveled look we named him furball.  My office was about 150 yards from my house and was surrounded by oak trees.  A couple of years ago we had a heavy acorn crop, the ground was literally covered with a  them and the deer often came in spitting distance of the site office. One day there was this doe about 15 feet from one of our windows and the three of us on duty were looking and I know taking imaginary shots when we noticed a movement out of the corner of our eyes.  It was furball and he was actually stalking that deer.  He was down on his belly and looked for all the world like a miniature lion on the hunt.  I don't know what he figured on doing with that deer if he got close enough but in his little catty mind I guess he figured if he could just bring this one down he could eat like a king all winter.

I loved the stories.  I never was much of a cat person, but I have inherited one and she has won me over.  She has to have some Lynx in her background somewhere.  She's a small cat with no tail but is fearless and super fast.  I just might have to take her to the woods with me and see what happens.  She loves to lay under the shrubs in the front yard and observe the world as it goes by.  She is very observent and doesn't miss a thing around the house.  Keeps my 100 plus lb Black Lab in line.  We call her Thumper.  It would be cool to have a deer tracker and a deer pointer in the family.  I know she doesn't like Deer blood, because she smelled some blood on the gut bucket and high tailed it back into the house, I guess she thought she might be next!

Socks follows me around the property all year. Whenever I find deer tracks he sniffs at them. Maybe he figured out what I was looking for - don't know. Whenever I put on camo he runs to the door & want's to follow. Even the 444 doesn't bother him, not even a twitch. Sorry guys he's fixed. Ya'll should have seen him fall off the sofa & wlk into walls after the Demerol shot the vet gave him.  Paul

This is a legal loophole in the game laws. Our state's game laws say that no dog may accompany you while deer hunting.
There is no mention of cats at all...deer cats are legal !

I wonder if a cat would be as good at finding a downed deer as a dog is ?

I had a gray momma cat that would set next to me like she was a statue while i was shooting the crows or blue jays that came into steal pecans knock one down and it was hers. If she had kittens she would not let them come to her while we where hunting but she would take what ever I shot to them and let them have it or finish it if weren't quit dead. it was quite a sight to see. Me and my retriever cat.

i  have  been feeding a wild cat  for 6 years now

a year  ago   we  went out  of cat  food for a few  days

she  is  wild  and  hunts  so  who  cares

i  guess  she  thought  WE  were  all  out  of food

I guess size doesn't mean much when instinct kicks in!   ;D

My cat is tough on the chipmonk and squirrel population, but always eats his kill, much to Kathie's disgust!   :D

But his favorite is deer meat!  It amazed me the first time I saw how much raw venison that feline can consume!   :o

Here he is with the rest of the pack... doing what they all do best.   ::)
