Spend some time on Marlin Owners. There are so many flavors of limited edition guide guns with different stocks, finishes, barrels, sights, etc it is tough to keep track. The big levers are popular now especially in cold areas, but there are several kinds of those.

The Marlins are all a lot of fun and the 1895's are amazing.  Go for it.

You don't know what your missing.  Nothing like the 1895G except the CB maybe.  One day I'll get the CB too but the G model will do for now.

I've got both the Guide and Cowboy versions. Like them both a lot, but like the Cowboy a bit more than the Guide, something nostalgic about it that tweeks me. I scoped the Guide but like the look of the CB better with just iron sites. If I think I may have to make long shots on a hunt I take the scoped Guide version.

You will like the 1895 no matter what version you get, and there sure are enough versions to choose from. You should be able to get a very good used Guide or CB for $400-$500 if you look, and have the time to wait for the deal.

You will want to reload for it as the ammo is expencive. On the positive side, 45-70 ammo is fairly easy to find.

BUYER BEWARE- I can't quite describe it, but the noise those big 45-70 cartridges make as they are being cycled through that Marlin action is highly addictive.Once you get one, you'll experience it for yourself. So consider yourself warned. As Tony Soprano would say  "There's no going back!"

I got lucky and ordered a used .45-70 1895G from a Gander Mnt.  They checked online for used ones and although I originally did not want the guide gun, they found a used one in MI, I believe it was, for $295.00.  I ordered it without being able to see it but had to pay a non-refundable $25 fee to get it shipped to view it.  Well aside from the rear leaf breaking during the shipping, the rifle appeared to be brand new.  Truthfully, I  could not see any indication it had ever been fired and the clerk could not believe the condition when compared side by side with a new one from rack.  So with shipping and tax, I basically got it for $350.  Long story short, I love mine (even though I can't use it for anything in IL) and am glad I got the guide gun and if you have a Gander Mnt. nearby, have them check other stores throughout the country.

$556 brand new?  Not bad - "MSRP" is at least $100 more.  I just got one off Gunbroker that is not quite new.  Man is that ever a sweet little gun to handle.  I'm definitely in love.  I say go for it. ;)
