Always need to take extractor out before reaming? 357 Max
« on: January 12, 2010, 11:42:21 AM »
The extractor on my 357 sets deeper that the rest of the chamber rim. Do I still need to take it out before
reaming?

Probably not, but remember, the extractor is much harder than the barrel steel is, so if you catch an edge on the reamer you will probably take a chip out of it and really hack off who ever you borrowed if from.  Larry

Did 3 barrels and on all 3 the extractor/ejector was just a tad lower than the rim cut.  I just went reeeeeeeealy slow and stopped when we touched the rim cut.  DP

The correct answer is YES you should.

Many don't, for the reasons listed above. I aways have. I have screwed up my share of things, no sense in tempting fate.

I did ,my thinking was being inexperianced, that I was afraid of getting metal shavings behind the extractor/ejector and mucking thins up.

It takes about 10 seconds to remove it.  Why take a chance?  :)

I didn't know it was so easy to remove and replace. I suppose it is all in the FAQs somewhere?

Good to know about the harder metal of the extractor. Makes me wonder about the 30-40 i had
reamed and how the smith reamed the ejector.

Did he have to have a special reamer for that?

Yep...I did all three with it removed, and all others will be done the same.  Gives easy access to smooth up and clean real good when done.  Don't have to wonder if there is any filings floating around.  I would especially do this and ejector mod while at it for an ejector.
