over the shoulder rifle scabbard
« on: January 13, 2010, 08:00:15 AM »
I searched here but didn't find much on this topic.

Looking for a way to carry my 45-70 guide gun.
Does anyone here use one?
Leather or one of the tactical ones?
In googling, I see some use a tactical shotgun scabbard.

I also have an H&R .270 that also might fit.

Any help appreciated.

thanks
noel

I remember seeing that.
I think either tripple K leather or
or old el paso saddelry.
go to www.Bing.com and use as a search engine.
Tripple K makes a horse scabbbors that can be adapted for either a back pack or can add a sling to it.

I thought over rigging a leather horse scabbard for a while. I see them on eWhore in the $40 range. Instead I decided to go with the Kifaru GunBearer. It didn't arrive in time for my hunt last weekend so I can't say how it works in the field, but sure looks like what I need. Hope this helps, at least it's another option to consider, and looks faster than using a scabbard rigged to a backpack.

I have a Badlands pack that has a rifle holder built into it, it's nice, but it isn't designed to retrieve your rifle quickly for a shot. It's more for in the hiking mode when you don't plan on having to take a quick shot if you come across game while on the move.

Why not just use a rifle sling?  ::)

I think I just saw one in the Sportsmen's Guide flyer for fourty some bucks. It was a scabbard with a sling for over your shoulder.

Was thinking of one of these. Was going to order a couple recoil reducers anyway, so shipping was not an issue for me.

Better description on  p10. Looks no good for a scope.

Sportsman Guide has a military spec canvas shoulder scabbard that is for an 870, but it fits my 1894 perfect.  Less than $25.  Should work great on an ATV or over the shoulder.

What I found using a canva bag was that the stock is top heavy, and it choked me.

I made this, with the metal loop which makes the strap contour to my body,
and the D ring snaps to my belt and stops the choking.

I also like the Gun Bearer idea... please update on how well it actually works under real world conditions.

http://www.oldtradingpost.com/old-west-store/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=1_55&sort=20a&page=2     There are some other nice gun rigs on this site too like shoulder rigs for shotguns and holsters.
