Problem with my old Johnson 6.5 motor....
« on: October 31, 2003, 03:13:52 AM »
Although the thieves stole my 15 hps Yamaha outboard, I still have my old Johnson 6.5 outboard motor (sorry though it was a 10 hp, but I checked and it is not).   The reason I bought a new outboard motor is because my old outboard is over heating/giving me problems.

Last year my anchor got tangled up in some weeds along the shore, I tried using my Johnson 6.5 at full power to try and pull the anchor loose, it looks like the motor over heated and burned the head gasket.

I have taken it apart 3 times trying to repair it, first I cleaned out all of the motor's cooling lines in the engine.  I then installed new gaskets, head gasket, side gasket, etc.   I also replaced the impeller for a new one.  But every time I tried the motor, the stream of water from the cooling system comes out with very little pressure, it even takes a while for the water stream to come out.  After about 10 minutes of running, the motor over heats, even the small stream of water becomes hot enough to burn one's hand, hot enough to create water vapor.

I think I might have made one error when fixing the motor, when I replaced the impeller I did not put a new gasket on the case of the impeller.  Could this be the problem?  If not, what else could be causing so little water pressure in the cooling system and is causing the motor to over heat?

Since my new motor was stolen, I will have to fix my old motor, I consulted with my wife and our budget is tight and another new motor is out of the question for now.

I sure would appreciate any info.

Thank you.
Eddie

I'd say you hit the nail on the head with the gasket, Ya might take the pump back apart and replace it, a gasket shouldn't break the bank.

Thanks for the reply, I will take it apart and replace the gasket on the impeller's case.

Also while you're in there make real sure there's no obstruction in the line.

My brother replaced the impeller in a small outboard for a friend of mine.....one of those little sailboat motors, and all that was really wrong was something in the line.

Got a compresser...blow some air through it.

That was one of the first things I did...

but I used a high pressure water hose, the water ran freely, so I don't think anything is stopping up the line.  Besides on this model Johnson it has a screen that filters the water before it enters the inside the motor, no way anything big enough to stop up the line could have gotten in.

Thanks for advice.

The only thing wrong with the motor was that I had placed the impeller in reverse, my mistake.  It is now in good working order.

Thanks for everything.
