A problem with my old Johnson 6.5 outboard...
« on: October 31, 2003, 03:21:54 AM »
Although the thieves stole my 15 hps Yamaha outboard, I still have my old Johnson 6.5 outboard motor (sorry though it was a 10 hp, but I checked and it is not). The reason I bought a new outboard motor is because my old outboard is over heating/giving me problems.

Last year my anchor got tangled up in some weeds along the shore, I tried using my Johnson 6.5 at full power to try and pull the anchor loose, it looks like the motor over heated and burned the head gasket.

I have taken it apart 3 times trying to repair it, first I cleaned out all of the motor's cooling lines in the engine's top part. I then installed new gaskets, head gasket, side gasket, etc. I also replaced the impeller for a new one. But every time I tried the motor, the stream of water from the cooling system comes out with very little pressure, just a small stream of water, it even takes a while for the water stream to come out. After about 10 to 15 minutes of running, the motor over heats, even the small stream of water becomes hot enough to burn one's hand, hot enough to create water vapor.

I think I might have made one error when fixing the motor, when I replaced the impeller I did not put a new gasket on the case of the impeller, I was told it wasn't needed. Could this be the problem? If not, what else could be causing so little water pressure in the cooling system and is causing the motor to over heat?

Since my new motor was stolen, I will have to fix my old motor, I consulted with my wife and our budget is tight and another new motor is out of the question for now.

I sure would appreciate any info.

Thank you.
Eddie

Have you checked the thermostat?  I had a 18 hp that did the same thing and the stat was stuck.
